Likelihood to Recommend I have had a chance to use few other data modeling tools from Quest and Oracle, but I am most comfortable using erwin Data Modeler. They understand your data modeling needs and have designed the software to give you a feeling of completeness when you are designing a data model.

Read full review Pros Reverse Engineering: I love the way we can import an SQL file containing schema meta data and generate ER diagram out of it. This is specifically useful if you are implementing erwin Data Modeler for an existing database. Forward Engineering: We use this feature very frequently. Where we do database changes in our physical and logical data models and then generate deployment scripts for the changes made. Physical vs Logical Models: I like to have my database model split into physical and logical models and at the same time still linked to each other. Any changes you make to logical model or physical model shows up in the other. Read full review I like being able to create our own tables that aren't specified by the application; arranging data utilizing data spaces is a dream come true. Using semantic data space instances with workflows improves performance significantly; firms with several domains may use the same application with numerous data spaces for master data management. SAP (MDG) remains unique in the flexibility to model and manage master data the way it is used in the company, with all capabilities easily available through an intuitive user interface, and is not bound by the vendor's mandated data models. Read full review Cons Cost is the single largest barrier to entry with this tool. Would like to see a greater variety of export options available for use outside of the tool, for example as a vector graphic. Support has been uneven at times. Read full review As with all powerful and complex information platforms, SAP MDG does have a learning curve to it, especially if you plan on doing advanced things such as implementing MDM automation. SAP MDG is capable of replicating data across many platforms (including non-SAP) however, this too, has a learning curve to it and will require some work. Bottom line...it doesn't just happen out of the box! SAP MDG's flexibility can also be a weakness as sometimes you just want to implement a standard governance flow without defining everything from scratch. We have found that usually, you will need to define each workflow yourself in order for it to work properly. Read full review Likelihood to Renew MDG has proven to work and to bring results once implemented with the right approach, right engagement and sponsorship. Given that it is a very good tool to govern and control master data. Mainly if your company runs SAP systems which there will be a very straight forward integration, not needing any additional middleware or technologies.
Read full review Usability I had a lot of experience using erwin Data Modeler for designing data models. I think it's pretty intuitive and easy to use. It has enough features to represent your database requirements in form of a model.
Read full review SAP Master Data Governance(MDG) provides ease of use for the end users i.e. master data experts. It provides a good UI that is not SAP GUI. SAP provides support for any standard issues that we face. Their new set of Fiori tools helps us get more bang for our buck.
Read full review Support Rating CA customer support and our account manager have been able to support us with any issues that we have had, from managing our serial keys to issues we logged tickets to resolve. There are aspects of key management that have made it difficult over the years but support usually has worked with us.
Read full review I haven't been using the support services individually. Instead, there are responsible units within the institution who train and support the users of the software in the institution. The service provided by these units are quite adequate and they probably get the service from SAP itself. That's why, I can assume that the support services are quite successful.

Read full review Alternatives Considered Not listed, but I've only used alternatives built into something like the Squirrel SQL editor. That one is semi-functional but lacking many features and, in some instances, just plain wrong. The only pro there is that it's freely available and works over ODBC. I've tried some of the other free ones like Creately but didn't have much success.
