Exabeam
As a SIEM tool for investigations, Exabeam is the best in class. The AI assigns numeric values to observed logs them presents high scores to the analyst in a simple dashboard. We can see what is a real threat and ignore so many false positives. Exabeam is the best SIEM was used from an alert fatigue perspective. The simple interface allows other teams not just InfoSec to utilize the tool; helpdesk for asset diagnoses, HR for staffing questions, etc.

It's well suited for what I do, which is network security operations. And that's for anything from troubleshooting incidents, troubleshooting performance, troubleshooting for the purpose of a compliance and auditing. It's not best suited for users who are new in terms of they're new to the product and they have expectations that probably Splunk cannot meet.

Our company has very complex and dynamic security operations because of the large number of security tools and systems that we need to manage and coordinate. Moreover, it helps us to meet many regulatory and compliance requirements because it helps us to automate and document our security operations. We also use it to streamline our security operations and improve our response to potential threats.

  • It is very useful in creating custom rules for analyzing system logs and display relevant information. The query language is very easy to learn.
  • We can create custom UI to visualize the output of our data. The interface is very flexible. It also allows the sharing of rules among users.

Cons
Exabeam
  • More and better drop-down menus, some items in threat hunter require you know subsets.
  • Less dashboards, combine AA and DL without having separate logins.
  • More complete playbooks are already built out. You have the structure set up for templates like malware and phishing, go further and completely build them out from start to finish, most companies would just use them and not personalize their configurations.
  • Quarterly health checkup diagnostics of systems sent out to users.

  • Splunk light limits number of users to 5. Wish there was a flexible license, where one could add more users.
  • Splunk light does not let you add > few realtime alerts. Wish there was a flexible license, where one could add as many realtime alerts as wanted.
  • Better insight into daily ingestion values

  • A lack of instruction It can be difficult to contact the support staff. Limited experience from current users.
  • It takes some effort to set up and learn new technology at first. More assistance is required from the support staff. The product's price needs to go down.
  • Cost of the larger version.

We are using Splunk extensively in our projects and we have recently upgraded to Splunk version 6.0 which is quite efficient and giving expected results. We keep track of updates and new features Splunk introduces periodically and try to introduce those features in our day to day activities for improvement in our reporting system and other tasks.

As we already have a lot of clients being catered with Splunk SOAR and because Splunk SOAR is robust and efficient, we are already using it, and we have understood the product to a certain extent, I feel we are personally more enticed to use and scale it to a lot of business.

Usability
Exabeam
Exabeam is very good at processing lots of logs without excessive licensing costs. It has a professional support team that's very quick to resolve any issues and provides custom parsers quickly and enables our analysts to search vast data sets without having to wait long for results to be returned. The product is getting more mature with new features every major release.

You can literally throw in a single word into Splunk and it will pull back all instances of that word across all of your logs for the time span you select (provided you have permission to see that data). We have several users who have taken a few of the free courses from Splunk that are able to pull data out of it everyday with little help at all.

Building playbooks through the visual editor is fine for basic tasks, but once you start chaining complex logic or integrating 3rd party APIs you hit a wall that requires deep scripting knowledge.

We are able to automate almost every one of our use cases, even our threat-hunting, and threat intel procedures. We have 20+ playbooks and cover almost everything, even searching logs into Splunk, looking into TIP and external systems, enrichment, and collecting evidence for analysts; it can perform concurrent playbooks running.

Splunk maintains a well resourced support system that has been consistent since we purchased the product. They help out in a timely manner and provide expert level information as needed. We typically open cases online and communicate when possible via e-mail and are able to resolve most issues with that method.

Online Training

Cisco
The online course was simple clear and described the main capabilities of the solution. There is also an initial module that can be done for free so anyone can familiarize themselves with the functionality of this solution. On the other hand, however, there could be more free online courses. Maybe even with a certificate, this would broaden the group of people who are familiar with the platform while increasing familiarity with the solution itself.

I didn't get to fully evaluate Logstash as our corporation was already using Logstash, but both seemed like viable solutions to the problem that we were having. I wanted to evaluate Logstash some more, both did seem like they would work for the business needs that we had, we went with splunk as many teams were already using it.

Splunk Phantom integrates well with Splunk ES and has many integrations. One thing that I liked about XSOAR as compared to Phantom is that it has an "app-store" where you can download not only app integrations (similar to Phantom) but Playbooks and dashboards as well.

  • I don't have any numbers to share but Splunk has positively served as a 24/7 monitoring tool that has saved hours of work by self-detecting, saving statistics and alerting problems in the system or from external interfaces as soon as they happen.
  • Splunk dashboards does a solid job in collecting, analyzing data and creating reports that contain an entire day's activity and then automatically sent out to the business.
  • Splunk is very easy to learn and very useful to any program or business application.

  • The playbooks are valuable. They are the core component. Being able to implement and build a code process to work through and scale out what we want to do is valuable
  • Before its use, analyzing each email would take at least 15 to 20 minutes, with some complex cases taking up to 30 minutes...With the automation provided by Splunk Phantom, we could significantly reduce the amount of time and human effort required to complete this task
