Linux Containers LXD vs. Vultr

Linux Containers LXD works very well when you, as a software developer using Linux, need to spin up a development environment to build and work on a specific piece of software. For example, you need to build some software that is tested and developed target Ubuntu 18.04. You're able to quickly create a container for Ubuntu 18.04 and log into it to run commands and build your software. This is easier to do than setting a virtual machine - e.g - via Virtual Box, but is a lot clunkier than doing it via Docker containers which give you a much more flexible configuration of the environment and are easier to start, stop, connect and share with other developers.

Vultr is best suited to deploy classic web applications, web services, and websites. It's well suited for mid-level traffic but has a wonderful option of expanding the disk storage, making it very well suited to run applications and services that need to consume a lot of data but don't need a lot of computing power. It may not be well suited to run applications that rely on a vast number of web services and require a vast number of data centers.

Linux Containers LXD feels like a more primitive version of docker, docker-compose and similar projects from the docker ecosystem. The Dockerfile and docker-compose.yml methods of specifying a container setup, as well as the network and file configurations afforded by Docker make working with containers much easier and more reproducible than with Linux Containers LXD.

Vultr started out primarily as a VM-only provider, but has since expanded offerings and locations to be a serious alternative for a lot of businesses currently using a large, expensive cloud provider. Vultr may not be for everyone or every workload, but there are many businesses and individuals that are adding way too much complexity and cost to their projects by using large cloud platforms they do not really need. Update to review: Vultr's new Optimized Compute offerings are a game changer. They are designed to accommodate a more diverse or resource-intensive workload
