It’s best for troubleshooting issues that require a packet level analysis. By having source/destination you can have a view into how the packets are traversing the network. If alerts/baselines are set up it can help identify something out of the norm. Very useful for VoIP applications as well. Would not recommend for small scale environments.

SolarWinds NPM

SolarWinds NPM works well for us as we are a relatively small shop with a limited number of servers/interfaces to monitor. If you were a larger shop the licensing for SolarWinds would get very expensive because they license it per "node" or item you want to monitor. If you want to monitor hardware and network on a single device, that's 2 nodes

  • NetScout nGeniusONE can help to deep dive into the packet layer, help to identify the real network and service performance problems in the protocol layer. We have been using NetScout nGeniusONE as the main monitoring solution for the mobile network for many years.
  • I have recently use NetScout nGeniusONE to support problem troubleshooting for a customer issue complaining of slow application connection into our Datacenter services. it was easy to use NetScout nGeniusONE to capture the problematic connection sessions by using various type of filters and export a pcap file for further analysis.
  • I‘ve also use NetScout nGeniusONE to investigate an NBN connection issue which was intermittent and hard to capture, however, by using NetScout nGeniusONE it was easy to go back to the history capture and logs, so we won't miss any important leads.

  • The map editor select rectangle needs to be improved on as when you drag it it can get out of control.
  • Need a more intuitive way to configure interfaces between nodes in map editor.
  • Acknowledging and erasing node warnings should be more intuitive.

Low maintenance cost and great support on problems and issues. SolarWinds has been used here for over 10 years and we are able to have minimal down time and has been solid on monitoring and alerting on our network setup. They are constantly adding new and improving the product and making it better to use all around.

It provides a lot of useful information, but it's not always easy/intuitive to find it. It really needs to get a fully functional API integrated to support automation and integration with other monitoring and analytics tools to enable faster decision making. On the other hand, it gathers a lot of useful information from complex networks that are useful for capacity management and faster incident isolation and resolution.

It's easy to use at first. But, when you would either like to go technical OR trying to add a custom monitor the ease of use goes out the door and requires a lot of time to learn its SDK / Back-end tools.Way too much emphasis on user to user support via their Thwack site. Skimping on support cost much? It's slightly disheartening to get better support from other customers then from the "success center" or calling support. Really hurts the ease of use for the product, because its fine until things don't work out of the box, then it gets frustratingly difficult.

In all of the times that we called support, someone at SolarWinds had the answer for us in a timely manner. Through thwack and other internet searching, we have been able to resolve all of our issues that arose to our satisfaction. The support staff have always been knowledgeable of their products or had a fellow support staff member to rely on to get the needed answers.

Majority of vendors on the market at the time only handle a piece of network instrumentation. Netscout covered all the bases which meet our company's requirements for "One throat to choke" rule. For the market we are in its nice to have a local team that can be onsite the same day if needed.

SolarWinds NPM

Other products I've used (Spiceworks, Mikrotik's The Dude) are good at their jobs but ultimately don't have the scalability of NPM or the more advanced network visibility features that make NPM so great. Other products (like Spiceworks especially) are also built as several products shoved into one -- an asset management platform, ticketing system, a network monitor, etc. -- and can be slow in performance or limited in their potential as a result.

  • We have not yet determined how to calculate ROI from NPM. It's definitely saved us lots of IT Ops time, and threshold-based warnings save us from downtime.
  • It's a stress reducer for IT Operations, once they feel confident in the monitoring solution and implementation.
  • Intelligent alerting helps us effectively categorize alerts as P1 or not, preventing unnecessary off-hours calls.
