The best scenario is a small non-profit clinic who needs a great EMR but cannot afford one like EPIC. I might also recommend this to colleagues who are starting a small business because I think PF would be a good, easy, and more affordable to get up and running. I think this EMR makes less sense in the setting of large academic institutions who need lots of easily manipulable data and a huge amount of support.

  • On patient rounds (working with the medical team and providing them updates on various therapies
  • Answering drug information questions (MDs questions that may need further review and response)
  • Updating lecture material (ensuring upToDate data)
  • Patient education utility (ensuring appropriate and up to date patient information)
  • Not useful for a comprehensive clinical review e.g. writing a paper, but it is not designed for that function

UpToDate offers a much more comprehensive tool when compared with Epocrates. Although both provide good drug references UpToDate goes far beyond the Epocrates tool in terms of clinical disease diagnostic data.
