SailPoint Identity Platform

It's appropriate for tools that already integrate well. Not good to force it on technologies and tools that don't natively work well with Sailpoint.

WSO2 Enterprise Service Bus

WSO2 ESB is an awesome product for companies looking to venture into the world of SOA with an ESB. They have a lot of other products too that can work really well with their carbon infrastructure. The interface is simple for deploying and managing proxy services. You can also write custom modules within the ESB using Java with IDE like Eclipse

Pros

SailPoint Identity Platform

  • The access request work flow and back end process is exceptional. It effectively manages all of the various pieces of a request and presents the completed request to the provisioning agent as a single record. This is very helpful to the efficiency of the process since the provisioning agent only sees the completed request rather than seeing each component as it is approved. Other systems deliver the various request components to provisioning as they are approved but cannot be provisioned without all the components. Thus creating complexity for the provisioning agent and impacting the SLAs with what looks like a delay with the provisioning process.
  • The system is robust enough to effectively handle the scale that we need. With 750+ applications, 24,304 individual entitlements to select from, and an average of 10,200 request transactions per month. We have never had any performance issues.
  • The system flexible enough to accommodate our complex business needs without needing to customize the base system. We have been able to add significant functionality to the system in order to support the business needs by extending the code rather than altering the base code. This has enabled a simple upgrade of the system without having to re-apply code enhancements.

WSO2 Enterprise Service Bus

  • One of the basic requirement of an ESB product is that it should be able to support transformation. WSO2 ESB provides support of XSLT, so you can transform your request to whatever format. Moreover, transformations like converting your xml payload into JSON and JSON payload to XML are out of the box available.
  • WSO2 ESB provides a scheduler feature, by which you can configure your own scheduler to call a proxy service at a particular time of day or or initiate sequence.
  • WSO2 ESB provides excellent error handling techniques, WSO2 ESB provides detailed error handling scenarios to tackle all the situations. WSO2 ESB also provides custom error handling by which you can make your own custom error message before sending it back to client.

Cons

SailPoint Identity Platform

  • During the time we acquired the solution, there wasn't a cloud version yet.
  • The SSO feature was sun-set so we used another product to use (okta).

WSO2 Enterprise Service Bus

  • While it's easy to configure for a quick start, it is not so easy to deploy by yourself in a complex production scenario.
  • Not very stable for production usage, we encountered several trivial bugs that make us believe that this product is still not widely adopted.
  • Lack of a built in mechanism for auto-restart in case of an application server crash.

Lack of auto-restart built-in capabilities. In case of running out of memory there are no built-in methods to recover from a crash, just for example, Oracle WebLogic Node Manager.

Alternatives Considered

SailPoint Identity Platform

All these products are really good at some key areas. They are all different and solve different parts of the puzzle. IIQ is more of a centric focal point that manages and maintains access in a vendor-agnostic way. It helps bridge the gap at the identity layer for different vendor applications, allowing you to keep your flavor of solutions and have them communicate at the identity context.

Return on Investment

SailPoint Identity Platform

  • We were able to save a lot of money by using IdentityIQ instead of paying for more multiple Oracle Identity products in the same space.
  • We were also able to use IdentityIQ to retire our Control-SA product which was end-of-life'd by the vendor.
  • The self-service capabilities of the product saved a lot of calls to the helpdesk.
