I used Skillsoft before discovering Lynda.com at my current firm. Both have strong offerings. Lynda.com has broader offerings and seems more technically oriented.
Chose Skillsoft Coaching
Lynda.com is still used at internally along with Skillsoft mainly because much of our staff are visual and gain a lot from the bounty of videos and courses Lynda.com has to offer on an array of subject that are not always as technical to the library we posses in Skillsoft.

We chose SkillSoft for the overall ease of use for both our users and our administrators and have a great value proposition. We have continued our contracts for the same reasons and the relationship we have built with our Learning Consultant and Account Representative.

Skillsoft has purchased many of their competitors - thereby improving their offering. However, we did recently evaluate Mindtools. Their offering is very good. It is a competitor of Skillsoft's Knowledge Centers. We are still in the evaluation process.

Skillsoft is well suited in a corporate setting that perhaps doesn't have the budget to develop all the training they feel their people need. It allows for a one-stop site where people can specifically search for the content that addresses their particular areas of improvement. It is also good for creating custom learning tracks to focus on those specific areas.

Enrolling is very easy and [accessible], courses are varied and quite intriguing, the specifics of every course given are quite useful for current businesses because you can educate your colleagues or your team through this tool and hit the ground running. This is very simple, online courses are super easy to access and very well programmed. The speed of the courses is also [adequate].

Pros
  • I really like their library of leadership videos where leaders share their best practices. They're short and easy to use in a variety of settings (e.g. trainings, business meetings, etc.).
  • I find Skillsoft to have strong customer service. They do a very good job of listening to your needs and advising a variety of solutions within the given parameters.

Cons
  • They are getting better, but keeping up with the IT times and keeping their site modern and user friendly
  • Compliance - we had 2 seperate interfaces between the compliance part (Academy) and the Business Courseware catelog and our custom content - this created a lot of confusion around what was what. Support and the usablility of Academy was not up to par with what we were used to with the normal SkillPort.
  • Technical support doesn't always have the answer

  • One of the biggest problems of this platform is the credibility of their certificates because they are not endorsed and don't have the support of a university as other platforms do.
  • Anyone can upload a course, so sometimes you will have a bunch of options, but you really don’t know which one is the best for you among all of them.
  • Another thing that I don’t like about Udemy is that the platform is not very well organized, everything looks crowded.

I would recommend to renew as this is part of our employee development goals and we make a strong commitment to develop employees' people skills. I think SkillSoft has a very innovative approach to develop people's interpersonal skills other than traditional classroom learning.

Usability
There are things that could be easier. Having a more customizable carousel that can rotate relevant content in and out on a regular basis would be nice. They could also make some of the video content more engaging. Some of it is pretty dull and people can lose interest pretty fast.

First, creating custom courses was super easy and intuitive (unlike with their main competitor). Second, using Udemy to take courses was also intuitive and simple. Finally, though, the kicker for what makes Udemy super useful is its reporting and analytics. Again, Udemy's main competitor surprisingly lacks a ton of features related to reporting. I miss Udemy!

Support Rating
Very responsive, knowledge and helpful. They are always focused on ensuring they are doing the very best to support our success.

I haven't had to contact Udemy for Business for support reasons. I gave a 10 here because of it's availability across numerous platforms: Web, Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, even smart-tv apps make it trivially convenient to do some learning wherever you are. This helps my reports engage better with their learning, especially if they prefer to defer the training until the couch at home after work. It just makes for great user experience.

Return on Investment
  • I don't see really any negative ROI for Skillsoft. It's maximized training for my company and the others we service. I do not know the exact numbers but even with the minimal issues we have with the platform, the individuals who control the platforms purchase speak highly on its cost minimization.

  • Udemy for Business easily pays for itself compared to traditional training solutions. Given the breadth of courses it offers, it will make up its costs in short order.
  • My team is more engaged with learning, now having a large and "freely" available library of course content. This enables them to explore and learn at their own pace, which is a huge benefit to the company - they are always learning things that could be applicable in the future.
  • As I mentioned before, I'd caution against Udemy for Business in settings where the students will need to ask a lot of question or get some immediate feedback. It can be challenging for students approaching a new skill to do so without real-time support.
