BDRSuite Backup & Replication - Vembu Backup

Rating: 1 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use the BDRSuite Backup & Replication Vembu Backup to protect our virtualized environment in a clustered Hyper-V setup. In our experience, the software's restoration options are very poor and not intuitive. Some restorations have never been completed, despite running for many hours. File restoration on an NFS simply does not even open the protected content. For us, backup jobs are slow and fail to complete most of the time. In our experience, the space used by the generated backups consumes a lot of space, and the cleanup of old data does not happen most of the time, requiring manual deletion - which is also very difficult to do. I do not recommend using this tool.

Pros

  • Interface for initial configuration is intuitive
  • Backup job configuration and scheduling is easy
  • Admin interface is web-based

Cons

  • Backup restore need some improvement
  • Old data management need serious atention
  • Windows based cluster are not easy to setup

Likelihood to Recommend

For us, on a Hyper-V cluster enviroment, BDRSuite Backup & Replication never worked, so we've abandoned it. Restore of protected data never worked, old data management need serious atention, speed of backup jobs need improvements, NFS retoration fails on simple display content to choose what to recover, cluster protection is absent. I do not recommend it.

BDRSuite is helpful to backup and recover our virtual servers

Rating: 9 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have about 20 virtual machines on about several ESXi 7 host server. Every day We use Vembu BDRSuite to backup virtual machines from hosts to offsite USB disk connected to Vembu server, all the virtual machines are replicated daily to other ESXi 7 hosts. Sometimes virtual machine is defective, we will recover immediately by turn on replication VM or restore from USB backup disk if we need history version.

Pros

  • Daily email report provides all necessary details of the tasks.
  • Scheduled Image Integrity Check confirmed backup data reliability.
  • I can easily allocate Vembu license between VMs on portal. It's useful when I just want to test some VMs.
  • BDRSuite has powerful reports to let me review task status from different direction.

Cons

  • On my BDRSuite server, some backup task reports couldn't show backup data size, then Vembu support solved it.
  • BDRSuite task name can't be changed once it's created. It's not convenient for us if the tasks content is changed.
  • I can't sort task name. For example, our backup task name is started by weekday names, if I want to check Monday tasks brief information, I need to use search box to find out, not able to sort Monday task together.

Likelihood to Recommend

It provides reliable daily backup tasks and it is important for us to have no worries of system crush. BDRSuite is full featured, I had been using BDRSuite to replicate servers from Hyper-v to ESXi, it's quite useful and easily to process than other VM migration tools between different platform. BDRSuite costs less than other backup product because I can decrease/increase/allocate license between VMs easily. The license charge two ways, server or VM. We choose VM license.

  • Fantastic Support
  • Solid software
  • We are able to call and get support super fast

Cons

  • The software once used is manageable, but takes a little to get there. There are so many settings
  • Pricing could be a little lower

Likelihood to Recommend

Again we use it to back up our VM servers and it does a great job of this.

Vembu BDRSuite for my clients.

Rating: 8 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are Cyber Security and Technology consultants. We are also partners/resellers of Vembu BDRSuite backup products. We use Vembu BDRSuite in our organization and four of our clients are using Vembu BDRSuite. Three of our clients need simplified disk-to-disk-to-cloud backups and one is using cloud M365.

Pros

  • Easy to install and configure
  • Backups are granular for easy recovery
  • Low resource overhead

Cons

  • User interface on the servers do not have enough tools to better monitor the systems and finding information is difficult.
  • User interface at portal is difficult to navigate and confusing
  • Support documentation is too generic and rarely answers my questions.
  • Licensing and acquisition. As a reseller and partner the licensing model is confusing and the portal interface to manage licensing should be scrapped and rebuilt. It is difficult to navigate and the available information is too vague.
  • Recently, communication with new channel contact. My previous contact was articulate and answered my questions.
  • Did I mention licensing? This is the most confusing and difficult process I've dealt with in 25 years. Makes Microsoft look simple.

Likelihood to Recommend

This product is great for small businesses who need a cost effective, efficient, and simple method preserving data and disaster recovery for information this product does not provide more details on backups and of enough information to troubleshoot issues.

Vembu BDRSuite Review

Rating: 10 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use the Vembu BDRSuite for Office 365, Google Workspace, local Hyper V, local file and folder backups, and offsite replication. Recovery is very robust with several options. The product offerings are very affordable. We have been a customer of Vembu for over 15 years and have been extremely happy. The customer support and technical support are reliable and quick.

Pros

  • Stabile Product
  • Good pricing structure
  • Good communication
  • Great technical support

Cons

  • Would like more technical support documents
  • More explanations of fixes applied
  • Easier installation documentation

Likelihood to Recommend

While it is hard to be a catch-all backup solution, I think they do a great job with so many variations of products that really give us peace of mind in case recovery is needed. Most of the diverse products we will never use, but I can see other larger companies having the need.

All in one backup solution your company will need

Rating: 10 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We mainly use BDRSuite to backup ESXi VMs. Creating backup is very straightforward and recovering is easy with few clicks. Backups also consume very low space on the NAS storage. BDRSuite is the best option for all in one backup needs for our company. Also their pricing is very budget friendly compare to other costly Enterprise products.

Pros

  • Backup
  • Web Interface
  • Support multiple environments
  • Reasonable pricing

Cons

  • Having different section for managing old backups
  • Full backup and Incremental backup is a little bit challenging, should be more friendly setup
  • When I click on configured backup it should go to the list of backup history instead of its configuration.

Likelihood to Recommend

First of all Web UI makes it so much easier to manage, with few clicks you can schedule a backup, you can see the progress and you can instantly recover it. There is a multiple environment support which is great for hybrid environments. Pricing is more reasonable than other high priced backup solutions.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I run a small, one-man software development company. I have two physical Hyper-V servers hosting a total of eight VMs, three of them servers with two of those Active Directory Domain Controllers. I use BDRSuite to back up all of those VMs to local hardware nightly. BDRSuite gives me the confidence I need to ensure my essential data is safe and can be restored in the event of an unexpected data disaster.

Pros

  • Excellent support.
  • Good documentation.
  • Ease of use.
  • Reliability
  • High compression ratio.

Cons

  • A visually appealing dashboard is needed, displayed at console startup, providing an easily read snapshot view of the system's overall state.
  • The UX for creating a new backup job can be confusing, particularly during the guest access steps.

Likelihood to Recommend

I only use the software for a limited scope of its capabilities, but I'm able to report that it works quite well for nightly VM backups.

BDRSuite - A Great Solution for Hyper-V

Rating: 9 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use BDRSuite on the servers for my clients. They are my primary go-to for backup purposes. I set up my clients' servers in a Windows Server Hyper-V environment. BDRSuite backs up each of the VMs on each of my servers and sends me reports of its successes/failures daily. When an issue comes up and I can't resolve it personally - Vembu's technical support team is prompt to respond. Sometimes it takes longer than others for them to get to the bottom of an issue but they will stay on the case until the issue is resolved.

Pros

  • Backup my entire server and VMs in Hyper-V
  • Sync offsite to other remotely located servers
  • Provides backup reliability reports

Cons

  • Language barrier when dealing with issues
  • Time zone issues with support
  • Not all support agents are thoroughly trained and they need to escalate often

Likelihood to Recommend

I use Vembu's BDRsuite exclusively for my Hyper-V servers for my clients. I have been with them for the past 5+ years and plan on continuing.

Flexible hybrid backup resonably priced

Rating: 10 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use BDRSuite for backup purposes and provide backup as a service to our customers. By means of BDRSuite our customers don't need to handle backup themselves. Also we can keep a backup copy at our data center in case of a disaster in order for the customer to survive a devastating fire or similar catastrophy.

Pros

  • Backup is done fast and reliably
  • Backup is done secure since a backup copy can be stored off site
  • It is easy to use and configure
  • It works well with all types of operating systems
  • The support is fantastic

Cons

  • Once registered you can't change your email address easily
  • User interface could be more logical
  • Rentention seems to run for a long time without giving any status or prognosis. You can't see how much progress it has done or how much time is left.

Likelihood to Recommend

BDRSuite is great at doing traditional server backup and/or backup of selected workstations. BDRSuite can do quick restores since the backup server is running at the customer site. In addition security can be enhanced with an Offsite DR server to maintain a replica of the backup data.

In case of small businesses with only a few workstations and no centralized server BDRSuite is less usable. It would nice though if the Offsite DR server could do a backup of single workstations over the internet.
