Product Details

What is Render?

Render provides a way to host apps, websites, and web services. The user can link a GitHub or GitLab repository and click Create Web Service. Render automatically builds and deploys the service every time there's a push to the repository. The platform has native support for Node.js, Python, Ruby, Elixir, Go, and Rust. Render can also build and deploy anything with a Dockerfile.

Some features and benefits of hosting Web Services on Render, as described by the vendor:
  • Zero downtime deploys
  • Free and fully-managed TLS certificates
  • Custom domains (including wildcards)
  • Manual or automatic scaling
  • Optional persistent disks
  • Pull Request Previews
  • Instant rollbacks
  • HTTP/2
  • DDoS protection
  • Brotli compression

Deploying static sites on Render can be done by linking a GitHub or GitLab repo — Render then builds the static site every time there is a push to the repo, and serves it over a global CDN with fully managed TLS certificates.

Static sites on Render are free, with no cost unless they go above 100 GB of bandwidth per month.

Out of the box the static web hosting service on Render includes:

  • Continuous and automatic deploys from GitHub and GitLab.
  • Instant cache invalidation with a global CDN.
  • Unlimited teams and collaborators for free.
  • 100 GB/month bandwidth included at no cost. Additional bandwidth just $0.10/GB per month.
  • Automatic Pull Request Previews.
  • Redirects and Rewrites.
  • Custom HTTP headers.
  • Native HTTP/2 support.
  • Detailed bandwidth graphs.
  • Automatic Brotli compression for faster sites.
  • Automatic TLS certificate issuance and renewal.
  • Automatic HTTP → HTTPS redirects.
  • Unlimited custom domains.
  • DDoS protection.
  • 400 free build hours per month across static sites and free web services.

Services can also include managed and backed up (optionally) Redis, or PostgreSQL, optional "Render Disks" (Render services can use disks to store data that persists across deploys and restarts, making it easier to deploy stateful applications while benefiting from Render features like instant setup, fully-managed TLS certificates, private networking and auto deploys from Git; Render Disks are backed by SSDs and protected against data loss through automatic daily snapshots), and the Render Public REST API.

Some users have mentioned that the free tier of the platform is slow when it comes to deployment and server start time after the server is moved to sleep state.

Several reviewers have pointed out that Render's limited language support could be an issue for developers who prefer languages other than Node.js, Python, Ruby, or Go. They also mentioned that the built-in services provided by Render may not offer enough flexibility and customization options compared to third-party services.

There have been reports of difficulties with pricing descriptions and GitHub integration. Some users experienced being charged for a failed deployment, which was not the case in other cloud platforms. Additionally, there were instances where they were charged for PostgreSQL despite the promise of 90 days of free usage. Users also mentioned that the GitHub integration took a significant amount of time to complete.

Render is highly recommended by users for developers looking for a scalable platform that can handle any project. Users have found Render to be a good choice, particularly for those who are already using GCP, Azure, or AWS.

Users also recommend giving Render a try, especially if you are already using one of the major cloud platforms mentioned above.

In addition, users have noted that Render is suitable for straightforward stacks but may not be the ideal choice for complex stacks that involve tools like Redis and Elasticache.

Lastly, users suggest trying out Render with a small investment of around $14 per month. This can make deployment easier for the team and allow them to experience the benefits of using Render.
