Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are a MSP and we use ScienceLogic SL1 to monitor customer devices and applications.

Pros

  • Dynamic applications are easy to create, modify, and customize for any use case
  • Easy to integrate with SSO
  • They continue to improve the platform and make it easier to use for people without coding skills.

Cons

  • Upgrades such as from OL7 to OL8 could be much smoother with more prechecks and support from ScienceLogic SL1
  • Change logging would make it easier for us to identify what caused certain issues.
  • Many powerpacks only include generic catch all events, for example one event for all minor VMware alarms, one event for all major VMware alarms, and one event for all critical VMware alarms. This makes it difficult when a customer wants us to suppress a single alarm. If there were separate events for each alarm it would make it easier to customize and suppress events for each customer.

Likelihood to Recommend

ScienceLogic SL1 is well suited for all network or server monitoring use cases.

ScienceLogic SL1 Does the Setup Live Up to the Hype

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use ScienceLogic SL1 to monitor and keep tracks of all the alerts. We have created a dashboard in ScienceLogic SL1 which helps us to identify us which site has went down and which service is affected. With this it helps us to reach out to a particular team to resolve and rectify the issues at the earliest. Also with the alerts generation we will be able to know if the issues is resolved or still ongoing.

Pros

  • Triggers alerts if some service or site is down
  • Helps us to identify the exact issue to resolve as soon as possible
  • It is user friendly

Cons

  • In the unified view we have widget as HTML, it would be better if there is any room for other coding areas
  • It could be good if we could schedule time for suppression like how we have for maintenance window
  • I could think of only these 2 for now

Likelihood to Recommend

It helps to understand the structure clearly. It gives us an alert showing that some service is down, or some site is down which will help us to rectify it at the earliest. Because of this MIM can be avoided, and since we will be notified at earliest we can resolve that at the earliest.

ScienceLogic SL1 FeedBack

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I am using ScienceLogic SL1 for monitoring network devices for different customers for availability and fault management.

Pros

  • It is a multi-tenant platform and customer traffic segregated
  • It is easy to use monitoring platform
  • It has bidirectional integration between ScienceLogic SL1 and ServiceNow
  • It also has bidirectional integration between ScienceLogic SL1 and Restorepoint

Cons

  • SSH Password Management for the servers need to be added to ScienceLogic SL1 for the STIG systems. ScienceLogic is unable to help anything with changing SSH passwords every 60 days especially when we have large number of collectors.
  • ScienceLogic should develop a contextual help page for each page for on-prem ScienceLogic SL1. It is currently directing to internet and there is no outside connection to get help from ScienceLogic SL1 page.

Likelihood to Recommend

ScienceLogic SL1 is generally nice tool and easy to use UI. Navigation panel is very helpful and able to duplicate tabs. One thing it doesn't have Database tool built-into ScienceLogic SL1 for STIG system. This will be nice to have since it can be queried directly on the ScienceLogic SL1 page.

SL1 in large scale networks.

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use SL1 for our telco client to monitor a large number of network and system devices and metrics. It is a robust and powerful tool that meets all our needs, and more importantly, the client is satisfied with the tool. After some time spent getting used to SL1 and its capabilities, I would recommend it for monitoring large systems.

Pros

  • Large number of devices supported out-of-the-box.
  • Monitoring enterprise systems.
  • Automation

Cons

  • Visualization
  • Reporting
  • Complicated UX/UI.

Likelihood to Recommend

ScienceLogic SL1 is a robust monitoring and alerting tool, great for gathering large amounts of metrics. It is easy to set up for large enterprise organisations. The report button is a great feature for exporting data from the current screen, but other reports that include graphs are outdated and lack customization options.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are using SL1 for monitoring of over 75K devices, both network devices and servers including V-centers and associated storage devices. Alerting is tied into our NOC Center so appropriate teams are notified when a major critical event occurs.

Pros

  • Customised "power packs" with monitoring applications for specific hardware models
  • Automation of connectivity maps
  • Supplies usefull tools like API tester and SQL query ability via the GUI
  • Easy to drill down to specific events that are alerting and see what corrective actions are needed.
  • Easy to extend alerting to email distributions
  • System is very scalable
  • Product support is outstanding, some of the best Vendor support I have seen in my 40 + years as an engineer
  • They are very responsive to user needs and offer customization in a timely fashion

Cons

  • offer more dashboard templates
  • provide more service packs for Arista Devices

Likelihood to Recommend

SL1 is well suited for big enterprise solutions where 10s of thousands of devices are being monitored.

SL1 may be over kill for a smaller enterprise where scalability is not needed.

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

SL1 was recently introduced in my organization. And now the adoption of SL1 for critical infrastructure alerting and monitoring is now in full force. The organization was able to adopt and deploy the service quickly with ease

Pros

  • Alerting and observability
  • Data gathering of metrics
  • Visualization

Cons

  • UI/UX can be further improved for simplicity
  • Use AI for suggestions and improvement of metrics
  • Better SSO login implementation

Likelihood to Recommend

SL1 is best suited for organizations having delivery on customer environments. Gathering important metrics of infrastructure is crucial to ensure there’s optimal performance among devices. The delivery team are always on 24/7 monitoring for any abnormalities , hence SL1 is best suited there! SL1 is also best suited for large enterprise customers and now medium sized business

ScienceLogic SL1 Review

Rating: 6 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use ScienceLogic SL1 to identify IT Infrastructure related problems in time and resolve them quickly before they affect IT Infra Service Availability and Performance.

Pros

  • Large coverage of IT Infra related products and services monitoring
  • Basic IT Infra Level Monitoring
  • Metrics and Events Monitoring

Cons

  • Dashboards are quite old and are of Iron age. Need to have AP2 dashboards only instead of AP1 and consistent new design across all functionalities.
  • Reporting is not improved since Y2020 and need to revamp completely. Need to integrate Dashboards and Reporting. PowerBI Like functionality to be given OOTB. Reports should be extracted in Excel, PDF, HTML and should be heavily automated.
  • Create and Open APIs for basic and advanced monitoring data extraction.
  • Topology based Event Correlation and Suppression should be improved drastically. Need to identify critical network interfaces based on Topology and monitor them. Basic customization of Dynamic App and/or Powerpack to exclude/include certain metrics/events to be permitted OOTB instead of customizations.
  • Integration with ServiceNow to be improved and to be taken to next level. Automation Powerpack should be made available OOTB as part of base product and to be priced attractively.
  • Take product to next level where we can monitor actual impacted IT or Business Service instead of metrics and events BSM and Topology map to be auto discovered and identify the network dependencies and alternate paths automatically instead of manual creation of BSM.

Likelihood to Recommend

It is appropriate for basic IT Infra level metrics and event monitoring for small and medium business. Not suitable for large scale IT Infra level monitoring of underlying critical services.

ScienceLogic SL1 - great features in an old school UI

Rating: 6 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use ScienceLogic SL1 to monitor our hybrid cloud infrastructure and network.

Pros

  • Infrastructure Monitoring
  • Event Management

Cons

  • UI - a lot of the UI feels old and clunky
  • Reports are quite hard to get right and don't look the best.

Likelihood to Recommend

ScienceLogic SL1 is great for enterprise organisations looking to see all their infrastructure monitoring in one place. The more modern UI in the event management application looks good but unfortunately any detailed monitoring uses the old UI, which is clunky and needs a refresh.

ScienceLogic SL1 Review

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are a managed service provider with responsibilities to monitor and remediate issues on client environments. Man-hours and scaling support per engineer is always a big issue, faster RCA and remediation or automated tasks helps to reduce effort to resolution. Scope is a large number of customers through a single monitoring platform, mostly infrastructure, OS and platform support.

Pros

  • Gathers massive amounts of metrics which can be useful when troubleshooting
  • Very customizable and open to modification and low-code additions
  • Support of the product be experts is extremely efficient and professional

Cons

  • Merge the nextui and classic to finally get everything in one, understandable that this happens over time but sometimes tricky to educate users to the subtle differences
  • Simpler integrations for the on-prem platform
  • Adding persistent device templates would be a welcome addition
  • When it comes to Virtual servers it sometimes becomes necessary to merge a virtual machine and an OS device that are in separate collector groups, this is a problem as DA's cannot be linked to a specific CUG

Likelihood to Recommend

Any environment where end to end infrastructure monitoring is required, the ability to discover and map out every component is very powerful and critical in speedy RCA determination
