Overall Satisfaction with ScienceLogic SL1

What we lacked most is the recommendation of what to focus on and what can be ommitted. As the tool was implemented on numerous clients before in our company, it would be nice to have feedback from the teams implementing the solution for these clients and save time by focusing on what matters the most (which metrics, which dynamic applications, what does what, what is not that much needed and what can be avoided completely).
We use ScienceLogic SL1 to monitor our Windows and Unix machines. I do not have admin rights, and in case there is some need from our side to modify some system settings or events, we are creating service requests to our company's ScienceLogic SL1 team. I have in scope Windows machines, so my responsibility is to configure correctly the thresholds and monitors of services, which we want to be aware of their state. Also discovery and configuration of the servers before deployment is in my scope.

Pros

  • Good granularity in monitored metrics
  • Easy to grasp overview in Device Manager
  • Different methods how to monitor systems (SNMP / PS)

Cons

  • Copying of text (hostnames, IP addresses etc) in the properties tab not working
  • System time in preferences could not be set to match my country's DST updates
  • I do not have visibility on the financial effect of ScienceLogic SL1 deployment, it is higher level of management.
  • For me, the investment is on faster way how to check issues with servers in my scope - sometimes performance analysis or check in ScienceLogic SL1 is enough and much faster than logging on a server.
  • Management of numerous servers at the same time via templates saves a lot of time compared to previous tool.
  • Agentless method, which has both pluses and minuses.
Both of the tools we used before were with agents, so there was a need to configure the agent initially, before it could be used. Sometimes, there were issues with the service or the configuration of the agent, and deep troubleshooting was necessary to find the mistake in configuration before the communication with the endpoint was restored. Once the tools were running, they enabled very smooth reporting of what is running and what not, and the performance impact was lover than with WINRM monitoring.

Do you think ScienceLogic SL1 delivers good value for the price?

Not sure

Are you happy with ScienceLogic SL1's feature set?

Yes

Did ScienceLogic SL1 live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of ScienceLogic SL1 go as expected?

I wasn't involved with the implementation phase

Would you buy ScienceLogic SL1 again?

Yes

For Windows, the issue is in higher resource consumption related to WinRM monitoring, which provides better options then the SNMP monitoring, which on the other hand is less resource intensive. The problem is also with support for OS with other than English language.
