Wizard Feature: Many users have found the Wizard feature to be extremely helpful in creating new user accounts easily and quickly. It has been particularly useful for those without a formal IT department, allowing them to perform tasks that would normally require technical expertise.
Web Client Ease of Use: The Web Client has been praised by users for its simplicity and ease of use. It makes it easy to set up and instruct customers on accessing the server from any device. Users appreciate that it requires minimal effort and is suitable for users with varying levels of computer knowledge, including non-experts.
Low System Resource Consumption: Users have expressed satisfaction with the newer version of Serv-U as it does not consume excessive system resources. This results in fast computer performance and eliminates the need for a high-end computer to run the software smoothly.
We print about 180 Newspapers for Customers in more than one State. The Dedicated FTP server is running Serv-U, currently with one domain and 212 users. This is primarily used for our customers to send in their PDF files for us to use in printing their newspapers. We also use it to disseminate useful information and "tips and tricks" using a virtual path that all customers can access.
Pros
The Wizard allows us to create new user accounts very easily and quickly. We do not have a formal IT department so those of us "mere mortals" can use this easily.
Using the Web Client has made it very simple to set up and instruct our customers on getting to the server from any device with a minimum of fuss. We have many customers with ESL, and school students including middle and high school. Most of them are not computer experts, just regular users so the simplicity allows to do the whole setup over the phone in minutes.
The newer version of Serv-U does not appear to be very resource-hungry so our computer runs nice and fast, without having to be a top of the range powerbox. We concentrated on large storage to cope with the file sizes we receive daily.
Cons
To be honest, as a regular user and not an IT professional, I can't think of anything else I need Serv-U to do for me.
Likelihood to Recommend
For anyone who needs to receive/send files between themselves and others, in an organized fashion, I would strongly recommend Serv-U as a great tool at a sensible cost. In our line of work, we can get several customers signed in at once, each sending in hundreds of Megabytes of data simultaneously. Serv-U has never struggled with this. We don't use the Quota set up for sending/receiving data but I can see it is useful where an exchange of information is the point.
Our IT has implemented SolarWinds Serv-U for both internal use as well as use by departments outside of IT. Internally it's used when working with other vendors to provide a more secure way to transfer large files, while other departments are using it to transfer files too large to email.

Cons
Uses Java.
Cost for licensing was expensive.
Support is a hassle at times.

SolarWinds Serv-U is perfect for departments who call all the time because their emails bounce due to large file size. The desktop icon allows them to send the files with no interaction from us, allowing us to work on more pressing issues.
Active Directory integration could definitely use some improvement. This was the biggest hindrance while implementing for us.

We are a printing company. We have people share and send us files to print for several years. We also scan files for companies, and use the file sharing option a lot to shift files around to other companies.

Great security features.
You can see all the activity from non allowed users trying to hack in.
Great visual interface.

Easier to update program.
Move away from Java to access files.
Selecting type of access you want without reloading Java.

When files need to be secure for sharing, Serv-U is the best.
Serv-U is being used across many departments within the organization. Both internal employee and our customers are leveraging the FTP solution. This product replaced another FTP server which failed and required constant attention from IT staff. This solution allows remote administration from within the network while staying in security compliance.

Once configured, daily administration is simple.

LDAP is difficult to configure.
Improve LDAP integration.

I believe that SolarWinds Serv-U is well suited for small to medium businesses that do not require an expensive high-end FTP server. Also, once the server is configured the daily administration can be handled by less experienced IT personnel. In my opinion this product may not be the right solution a large enterprise with heavy FTP traffic.

Serv-U allows us to have our users, both inside and outside the organization, access business critical files. This could not be done by email based on size limits, that Serv-U meets the business need.
Pros
Secure File Transfer.
Local User Accounts that can be used for outside users.
Cons
The LDAP authentication works but the home directory sets limits.
Enabling access to Virtual Directories would enhance the capabilities.
