We use SpyFu to monitor the competitveness and cost of keywords for running PPC campaigns, and also to see what terms our clients' competitors are ranking for to see what keyword opportunities present themself in each B2B industry we work in. The historic data SpyFu helps us see past, current and future opportunities.

SpyFu is well suited when creating initial PPC campaigns for B2B businesses, as it is provides historic and current data to help agencies spot opportunities and saturated search terms. This also works the same for planning SEO campaigns, as the data SpyFu provides gives a useful starting point to work out what terms and keywords to target.

I use SpyFu for researching competitor PPC campaigns and keeping an eye on their strategies. I find it helpful to see what keywords they are targeting, what ads they are running, and the competition’s estimated traffic levels. This helps me plan my own PPC strategy accordingly. I started using it a few years back and found it an in budget and easy-to-use PPC analysis tool. It just lacks a lot of insights on Organic traffic, or else it would have been my lifesaver tool!

I would say whenever I have to review a new website for organic traffic or historical data and map it with the Google updates (SpyFu has cool annotations), it becomes really helpful. Apart from that, whenever I have to do a PPC analysis, I have SpyFu instantly available with the best data for Google Ads (I wish they expand to other sources such as - Facebook and other Social accounts), but that's manageable. I just wish they improve at least some of the keyword databases. Once I was researching for a Yoga institute, and it found nothing but fewer than 50 keywords, whereas other tools have more than 5K keywords related to it.

Our Google ads campaign management team uses Spyfu for competitor and keyword research. It helps us know which keywords our competitors are targeting, what kind of ads they are running and what is their organic and paid traffic like. It also gives us a rough idea of how much they are spending via google ads (although that data isn't exactly correct). It also has useful backlinks information. Lastly the Google Adwords buy recommendations are pretty good too. They might not be always relevant but they do often enough include good suggestions that we end up using them quite frequently.

Pros

  • It is great at tracking Google ads and keywords that your competitors are using. That is all excellent actionable data.
  • You can download great, detailed reports of the same as PDF files if you want to keep them as a reference.
  • Pricing is really cheap. We paid under 39 USD for a subscription and we feel like we got more than our moneys worth.

Cons

  • Their ads spending data isn't correct. But you can make pretty accurate inferences from it since you know what you are spending.
  • Google ad buy recommendations are a mixed bag. Some are useful, some are not.

Likelihood to Recommend

If you have a Google ads PPC campaign and then I would say this is more or less essential if you want to know what your competitors are doing. You can get very useful data out of it even if you subscribe for one month. And the pricing is very reasonable. Even if you don't use Google ads, I would say this is still useful for your SEO/SMO team since it gives you a great idea of what keywords and traffic your competitors are working on.

I use SpyFu as part of my SEO work for both competitor research and keyword research to inform SEO strategies for my clients. I also use their reporting tool to provide monthly snapshots for my clients to show the progress we are making during the implementation phase of their campaign.

Pros

  • The filtering options in the keyword tool are super helpful
  • The multi-competitor keyword tool makes identifying keyword gaps so easy
  • Their branded reports are easy to use and save us from having to pay for a different reporting service
  • They provide real value at an affordable price

Cons

  • I honestly can't think of anything I dislike or would change about SpyFu

Keyword research, especially for identifying keywords that competitors rank for that your client doesn't. All aspects of competitor research include getting snapshots of the keywords they rank for, the websites that link to them, their Google ad history, and ad keywords. Simple but effective branded reports to share with clients.

I knew SpyFu was the real deal when our website's ranking rose by over a thousand positions in the same category in just a few weeks. It has become part and parcel of all our social digital campaigns. SpyFu has revolutionized our search marketing ventures by giving us an edge over our competitors in the search engine space. We use SpyFu frequently for keyword tracking, competitor analysis, and rank tracking while publishing our blogs.

  • Dives deep into deep information pools so you are never short of ideas or strategies
  • Increases website traffic to absurd numbers.
  • Monitors your ppc competitors.

  • Has been quite misleading in regards to ppc negative match recommendations.

Likelihood to Recommend

While I confidently give SpyFu a good recommendation, a part of me is slightly scared of what might happen if this lands in the hands of our competitors (it's the one giving us an edge over them). SpyFu is able to do most of the hard work for you so that you run successful digital campaigns. However, it all ends up in you as the user making very clinical analyses and the wisest of decisions from the pool of suggestions.

We use SpyFu mainly to find PPC keywords and keep tapping on our competitors. Though it offers SEO analytics and reports too in our company, we use it to find profitable keywords on which others are bidding/winning. Then, utilize them in our SEO campaigns to build organic traffic. Just plugin in the domain name (whether yours or competitor's) and you are done. It is a very straightforward tool!

  • Keyword Traffic and Volume Estimations are not precise.
  • It would be nice if they made the results region / country specific.
  • Report PDF takeout is not consistent. Misses out data points often.

For a small company, starting out and finding directions for building organic traffic as well as gaining exposure through Paid Ads, SpyFu is a good place to start. It is a smart move to understand what peers are doing and take action accordingly. I agree that their volume, clicks, and traffic estimations are not accurate but you get real close at affordable pricing. If you compare the pricing plans with competitors, SpyFu definitely has an edge.

I used the free version of SpyFu and was very impressed. It made me want to dig deeper into SEO and Google ads because, with tools like this, even a novice can become an expert. My favorite thing is that you can see the strategy of other successful dental practices and copy them.

  • Integration with more software like Dentrix or other dental.

I would recommend SpyFu to novice Google ad users OR advanced users who like to see more visual data all in one place. You can sift through lots of different online analytics to find the information, but it takes way too long. SpyFu has it all in one place! Right now I am paying another company to do my google ads, but I think that in the future I may try to do it myself and hire SpyFu to give me a leg up.

SEO keyword research can be overwhelming, and we did not want to spend hundreds of hours looking for the correct terms. We are a retail business primarily focused on the luxury space in the business-to-business and business-to-consumer marketplace.

SpyFu is great at providing keyword recommendations and canning your own website to give an overall SEO health score; however, the data they provide is for the advanced SEO and paid search marketer. I could see the tool being less appropriate if a team had no one able to comprehend the data and implement it. If the latter is the case, SpyFu is another wasted data source.

I used SpyFu to evaluate how competitors were advertising on Google Adwords. I used the text ad content, dynamic ad insertions, and display ads to create my own similar ads. I also used keyword targeting to create my own keywords to target based on competitors' keywords they use for bidding.

When you want to do competitive research based on what they are advertising, this is one of the best solutions. Say you don't know what type of text ads you are creating, or need display ad ideas, their spy tools are helpful. They also help you determine what type of keywords and targeting you should be doing.

SpyFu has been very helpful for compiling competitor data and identifying opportunities with this research. The usefulness in regards to using it for Paid Search is great! Specifically, SpyFu's capability to deliver a particular domain's ad history is very helpful in seeing what changes were made and how we can remain competitive.

SpyFu is a great platform for companies seeking competitive data, both for organic and paid search. It's paid search capabilities are more helpful than it's organic search capabilities, not because the tool is not powerful, but because alternative platforms like SEMRush or Ahrefs are a little more thorough on the organic side. For paid search, SpyFu is one of my favorite tools!
