What is Tricentis Testim?

Testim.io, from Tricentis since the February 2022 acquisition, leverages machine learning for the authoring, execution and maintenance of automated test cases. Testim uses dynamic locators and learns with every execution. It is designed to produce fast authoring and stable tests that learn, thus eliminating the need to continually maintain tests with every code change.

Tricentis Testim low code approach has helped us to create automation tests much faster, with more confidence, and allows much easier maintenance

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Tricentis Testim daily to automate our regression test cases. Testim has been great at working between several browser based applications, and allowing integration testing. There are also many useful pre-built tools to help with MFA, emails, scripting and scheduling. Testim can be used to automate actions in both company controlled applications, and third party applications where you do not have any control over changes or tags.

Pros

  • Customer Service/Help with automation
  • Temporary email service
  • SalesForce MFA signon
  • Variable Extraction and use
  • Custom Scripting

Cons

  • Could be some more controls around Test step pass fail within a test
  • Could be better visibility into cases opened with Tricentis
  • Could be better documentation around where/when and what JS is available to be used in tests

Return on Investment

  • Tricentis Testim has helped us run a thorough regression daily, something that we were unable to do before
  • Tricentis Testim has helped us to catch many seemingly unrelated bugs in a test environment the day of/day after code changes
  • Tricentis Testim low code approach has helped us to create automation tests much faster, with more confidence, and allows much easier maintenance

Usability

Testim works quite well

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use it for web and SalesForce application testing. Previously conducting tests via Selenium WebDriver and a host of other hacked together tools. Some folks left the org which created a huge problem in maintaining the test framework as UI updates became more frequent. Many scripts would completely break and the locators no longer worked correctly. Tricentis Testim removed the barrier for newer folks to rebuild these scripts which freed up a ton of time.

Pros

  • AI "Smart Locators" for dynamic applications
  • Manual testers don't have to code, but they can
  • Easy to use, simple UI

Cons

  • Bit on the costlier side
  • Working with other browser extensions
  • Reuse of scripts in opensource tools

Return on Investment

  • 25-30% less time spent creating tests
  • Faster analysis of bugs
  • Faster bug fixes

Other Software Used

Atlassian Jira, Jenkins

My review of Testim

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

In our organisation we are focusing more on UI testing and as much as possible code less automation. Hence the Testim tool is a great help. We are using Testim in three different use cases i.e. Basic smoke testing, End to end smoke testing and regression testing. In basic smoke we are validating the page statuses and in e2e smoke add, edit, etc. In Regression full functionality.

Pros

  • Data driven testing
  • Parallel executions
  • UI testing
  • Less coding

Cons

  • Multiple tab handling in browser
  • Window base pop up validation
  • Preview pdf validation
  • Tool tip validation

Return on Investment

  • Less time for script refactoring
  • Easy to use so more test coverage
  • Low maintenance
