When Implementing, take your time. Build up a plan from the physical network layer through to the logical layer, and [filter]. Using an Integration Partner such as AKCS can make this process painless, but also show and explain to in-house technical staff the setup and reasoning. Turn on logging for all events and rules while configuring and implementing the firewall, so you can see in the real-time logs where the security service may be too restrictive, so you can adjust according to your need. Be diligent in using Alias' as this will help you to make firewall policies that are easy to read when the configuration is being updated or examined later. Make sure you consider a High Availability implementation if the firm will be impacted if the external connection downtime will mean a significant impact for the organization. In Australia, Next Business Day, or quicker hardware replacement is not available at this time, although it has been available in the past, and maybe in the future, it is currently not on the WatchGuard Product roadmap

To effectively deploy WatchGuard, I recommend a four-part approach. - Preparing for firewall system deployment - Configuring your firewall system to reflect your security policy - Testing your firewall system to ensure it performs according to your specifications - Deploying the correctly configured firewall system appliance.

The initial migration from the Cisco ASA to the WatchGuard firewall was done through a 3rd party vendor 6 years ago. I would recommend documenting everything and making sure to keep a diligent naming convention with routes and policies.

Coming from a SonicWall background, there was a little bit of a learning curve with WatchGuard [Network Security]. However, documentation was readily available and easy to understand making implementation nice and smooth. WatchGuard [Network Security] support was also very responsive and eager to help where needed.

WatchGuard Network Security appliances are fairly easy for any engineer who's dealt with firewalls before to understand. Support is always there for you if necessary.

It is critical to have a plan. You must make sure that your deployment strategy will work with the end client as to not interrupt their business operations. Pre-programming the devices prior to on-site installation is critical to ensure a smooth implementation. Creating policies and creating a template for the devices also assists in the initial setup.

Set up is relatively simple. For maximum efficiency, we implemented a standard form that customers fill out with all the information we need to configure the firewall. Although we do this, there is always some application or service that needs troubleshooting when implementing for the first time, especially with small businesses.

When I set up my first WatchGuard, it took a while for me to get used to all the features and set them up properly. It wasn't difficult, though. I didn't use an implementation team. I have not used one for any upgrades since. They do have support and I call each time to review my plan and listen to any suggestions or tips from WatchGuard. If you are clueless, you can call and they will help. :)

It needs to be planned and the people assigned need to be adequately trained - especially if this is a first-time setup.

After a firebox is set up, I highly recommend keeping a backup of the configs whenever changes are made. This makes things super easy to get back online if a device is replaced. If you are planning on using additional access points go with a firebox model without built-in wifi.

The implementation of WatchGuard to our networks has gone extremely well, with very little issues arising. 9 times out of 10 the implementation is done as part of a replacement of another vendor's kit. We are yet to come across something that is not possible to move from that vendors's equipment to WatchGuard showing the range of availability with WatchGuard setups.

Very simple implementation with the skillset is also easy to pass on to others. The visual way WatchGuard's are configured makes it a lot easier to see the setup in a more human-readable format vs a lot of cmd line alternatives [that] don't lend themselves to the same multi-skill set admins.

The key insight is that you really need to have a clear idea of what you want to get, control and reach. After this, all the rest is that you need to have clear and effective communication with the WatchGuard partner for the implementation. All the rest is easy.

Having a vendor/support group that's familiar with your environment is key. Having a device that's robust, capable, and flexible only comes in second because a device without a config is just a brick. Bricks can set in my office for too long before I can dedicate enough time to config them. Support and hardware combine in the [WatchGuard Network Security] products to provide my group with security I can trust.

Implementation was fantastic for us as we did install ourselves however because of the easy quick delivery of the device to then the ability to simply move a config from an old firebox to a new one is seamless and invaluable as the engineer does not need to recreate all the firewall security policies saving time and therefore money.
