Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series Switches

We use our Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series Switches as an inexpensive way to provide layer 2 connectivity at our DMZ and outside edge.
  • Easy to set up
  • Rock-solid reliability
  • Cost-conscious for Enterprise
  • Licensing setup in 16.12.x code is unnecessarily complex
  • Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series Switches forces you to purchase Essentials or Advantage licensing for initial order
  • High ROI given the cost is low to purchase and minimal recurring costs, especially if you don't need or renew the Essentials or other license and stick with perpetual term licensing
We have not taken advantage of the DNA functionality that enables the ability for more automation, scale, virtualization, analytics, etc. Perhaps for an organization where there is a lot of need for such scale or functionality, it could be useful, but for our relatively small IT organization and few projects, it's not necessary.
We use the management interface for management purposes, but not anything fancier than that. We just needed a stable, reliable, cost-effective layer 2 switch and that's exactly what the Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series Switches provides. PoE options are helpful. The non-L series has the flexibility of different types of SFP modules, which is a nice perk. The highly available power supply capability (2 power supplies) is great as well, given it was missing in previous models.
Cisco Nexus copper switches vs. Cisco Catalyst Series Switches is often a tough call. Typically, a datacenter deployment would dictate Nexus to provide all the features and functionality, as well as stability that datacenters require; however, the cost-effective nature of the Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series Switches means more bang for your buck and will probably be all you need unless you plan to go heavy into DNA or ACI world.

Great for DMZ or outside edge, management switch that needs to be mostly copper, or any other layer 2 application where cost is more important than flexibility and features. Arguably less useful in the datacenter, given the division between DNA (Catalyst/branch) and ACI (Nexus/Datacenter), but again, if cost is a primary factor, then it's a great way to go. Also no higher end features found in the Nexus line, such as VPC.
