Cons

  • Learning Curve and Lack of Documentation
  • Cost Transparency and Pricing
  • Real-Time Data Delays
  • Feature Gaps and Integration Limitations
  • Efficiency and Optimization in the Operation Side
  • Enhanced Data-Driven Decision Making
  • Positive ROI Despite Cost Considerations
  • Scalability and Growth Enablement
On a scale of 1-10, I would give Datadog a 9 through it being easy to operate by the user interface, single dashboard and the number of integrations it supports which assists in closely monitoring advanced system from which, the user can resolve problems fast. Onboarding is easy to use and customizing visualizations is straight forward, but some UI bloat. and advanced settings feels a bit much for some new users. But following a few learning curves, Datadog’s design and features allow my team to work effectively and confidently on our energy infrastructure, providing real business value.
I have tried and used a number of other tools similar to Datadog such as New Relic, Splunk, Prometheus, AWS cloudwatch and Dynatrace. New Relic and Splunk provide excellent monitoring and analytics, but Datadog’s consolidated dashboards and ease of setup combined with a wealth of integrations were more intuitive for me. Prometheus is fantastic if you want openness, but it’s also more manual set up and more manual maintenance, and that was not ideal for our fast-paced product development. AWS CloudWatch is cheap for AWS-heavy stacks but does not have the cross-platform scope and the ease of use Datadog does. In the end, I selected Datadog because it was able to easily scale with our growth, it unified observability across all of our systems, and it made my team collaborate and be reactive, which is important to us, for our business.

Would you buy Datadog again?

Yes

We use it at work and in fact I don’t have enough great things to say about it. For distributed, complex energy systems and needed to track a real-time view of what’s going on, Datadog is the best that I’ve experienced. For instance, I use it to monitor temperature and pressure in our infrastructure, automatically alerting my team to anything out of the ordinary so we can act on it pre-emptively and not let downtime or safety issues occur. It’s also a fantastic tool for analyzing historical trends which can help us ensure we are operating efficiently and that we can make data-driven improvements fast.Datadog is not as appropriate when you have the cost containment as one of your main drivers, especially if you are dealing with really high volume of logs or need to store data for long periods your costs can go up pretty fast and sometimes are hard to predict. It’s also not the ideal solution for situations when deploying agents is complicated and when more advanced security analytics, such as full SIEM or SOAR capabilities, are required, as its security features are more basic than that of dedicated platforms.
