Overall Satisfaction with DigitalOcean

We have created our own custom scheduling software that allows us to manage various projects and associated information across the various internal departments at the company. While this started as an internal tool our customers requested access. Instead of dealing with maintaining VPN accounts or opening our server to public/anonymous access we chose DigitalOcean to host a public-facing copy of our software strictly for customer use.
  • Ease of use - You can get set up with a new server in a matter of minutes. It doesn't get any easier than that.
  • Support - The public forums are incredibly helpful as are the official help articles. I've never needed to contact the support team because of this. All of the information is at my fingertips.
  • Pricing - We're only paying $10/mo for a solution that gives our customers more confidence in us and is a selling point for us.
  • It's hard to think of things they could do differently without losing focus of what they do really well. They nail their promise. However, since I have to think of something I'll say that they could do minor things like give you the option of selecting which ports you want opened and how you want them forwarded internally. You have to manually set these up and it can be tricky if you've never done it before, so they could make these quick options as you configure your droplet before finalizing it.
  • Cheaper managed DB pricing - $15/mo isn't bad at all but $5 would be mind-blowingly amazing.
  • I was asked how quickly we could move from having internal servers to external ones as well. We wanted to provide something for a potential client quickly. I was able to get setup with DigitalOcean completely in a span of hours. The client was happy and the team was happy. All for $10/mo and a few hours of my time.
  • The stability of DigitalOcean has been incredible. We haven't had a single issue yet.
I've tried both AWS and Azure and, while they're both great solutions, they are much more challenging to setup and maintain. The idea that my billing could spike because of something unexpected leaves me a tad uneasy. For our solutions I'd rather pay the $10/mo with DigitalOcean and know that if something breaks, the server will be slow or stop and I can deal with that. Our customers can accept that easily whereas a large AWS bill my internal team could not.

AWS and Azure are built for hardcore devops teams whereas DigitalOcean has figured out how to serve those teams as well as others who are less technically sophisticated.
Between the official help articles and the community forums I've never needed to actually contact DigitalOcean support. The best support is the one that is so proactive you never have to contact the actual support team. No question is too silly for the forums and documentation and people are incredibly friendly and helpful.
Unless you need on-prem solutions DigitalOcean is a no-brainer. It's far easier to use than Amazon Web Services and, from my experience, cheaper in smaller usage scenarios. If you're really locked in with AWS perhaps you wouldn't want to switch to DigitalOcean because of the time to migrate and integrate with the API, but otherwise I can't think of a good reason to choose anything other than DigitalOcean.

Using DigitalOcean

I honestly can't think of an easier way to set up and maintain your own server. Being able to set up a server in minutes and have fully control is awesome. The UX is incredibly intuitive for first-time users as well so there's no reason to be intimidated when it comes to giving DigitalOcean a shot.
