Overall Satisfaction with F5 BIG-IP

My company has hundreds of services and apps that are balanced across regionally diverse data centers. We also load balance externally to GCP nodes. Some federated services have specific iRules for URI manipulation. I think we're only using a portion of the potential in our platform.

Pros

  • Versioning and updating provide much forgiveness
  • Visibility into performance. I've used the dashboard to troubleshoot memory leaks with developers.

Cons

  • I wish it was easier to see partitions simultaneously and their configs
  • There's other tools to report historical data, but it's difficult to tell for example when a VIP was removed
  • It would be great to have a tcpdump module for packet analysis
  • Front-ending hundreds of apps centrally reduced much complexity, ROI will be continuously realized
The sidebar help function is actually helpful. The dashboard is designed intuitively. I'm not often surprised by our F5 BIG-IP's operation. Predictable and reliable.

Infoblox DDI (BloxOne), Dynatrace
F5 BIG-IP is the defacto-standard for app load balancing with good reason. I don't think I'd entertain a more nuanced or technical approach for anything critical.
