Overall Satisfaction with Google Compute Engine

In our company, we are both users and integrators of Google Cloud Platform. Among all the products, Google Compute Engine is probably one of the most widely used, as it allows for the creation of virtual machines. We manage a wide variety of projects using this product. Suffice it to say that our entire infrastructure runs on GCP.

Pros

  • Resources allocation
  • Monitoring
  • Catalogue deployment
  • Awesome free tier and discount credits

Cons

  • UI for advanced feature
  • Cost prediction
  • Credits allows to to test and fine tune your infrastructure
  • Google Compute Engine relies on other aspects of the Cloud Platform to work, so you need to consider them.
  • Google offers tools and suggestions on how to optimize costs.
Assuming you've properly configured your server (and your applications), Google Compute Engine is extremely reliable in terms of availability and performance across all its tiers and VM types - including custom ones - available in the vast Google catalog. Even in the worst-case scenario, Google provides guidance on how to optimize your machines for better performance or cost savings.
Quoting a Google salesperson we once worked with: "We are Google - have you ever seen Google down?" It might sound like a joke, but after years of using the platform, it's slowly becoming true...
Cloud providers offering virtual machines are quite common. I think, Google, however, is arguably one of the top players in the market, with some of the largest (if not the largest) and most advanced server farms in the world. If you're looking for reliability and cost effectiveness, it's probably the best solution.

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2)
From a purely cost-based perspective, Google Compute Engine is ideal if you're building an application from scratch, as it allows you to start small with the free tier or promotional credits and then gradually scale up your architecture. Under the hood, you have the power of Google, which provides a secure and reliable environment to work in.
