Overall Satisfaction with HipChat

HipChat is being used by a large team/organization. It address mostly the need to be able collaborate as a team when we can't meet face to face.
  • Releases updates often, which is good when a bug is found that is affecting us as users.
  • Most everyday features are very intuitive.
  • The selection of add ons and bots is pretty good.
  • Out of the box it feels like it's missing a lot of functionality that needs to be added through ad ons or bots that a competitor tool includes.
  • The HipChat mailroom bot should be a standard feature out of the box and it should include additional features such as being able to mention someone through an incoming email that is sent to a room.
  • HipChat doesn't do a good job of making it easy to separate/clearly identify multiple conversations that are going on at the same time in the same room.
HipChat might have a slight edge over Flowdock because of the larger number of integrations available in the marketplace. Otherwise Flowdock is a way better tool out of the box. It has the best solution for separating multiple conversations/threads in the same room. It's email integration is also fantastic. I never used many of Slack's advanced features, but it seems to be the best option available right now due to the amount of integrations being developed for it. Slack is also super user friendly which is important when trying to get most users to adopt a collaboration tool for the first time in their careers. If the decision was mine, we'd be using Slack right now and NOT HipChat.
HipChat might be a more cost effective option than some of its competitors. So that is a selling point, but it also lacks some of the features of its competitors.
