Overall Satisfaction with IBM Power

Our IBM Power System S924 is used throughout the entire corporation. It is the heart of our manufacturing system. We use it for web applications, business intelligence reporting, accounting, and so much more. It is used to track inventory, product development, and work in process for the entire company. Nearly every transaction in the company goes through this system.

Pros

  • Stability
  • Growth
  • Efficiency

Cons

  • Speed comes at a great cost
  • Difficult to find support outside of IBM
  • IBM Power System S924 operating system is very dated
  • Zero down time
  • Simple and easy maintenance
  • Great IBM support
  • Dependable
There's really no comparison between IBM Power System S924and Dell PowerEdge R. Dell makes a very good product and has fairly decent service. IBM truly is heads above on all fronts. The main difference is probably the cost/speed ratio. Dell offers screaming fast servers at a great price compared to IBM. But IBM makes a much more stable platform. Also, the IBM operating system really can't run on anything, but IBM hardware is kind of pushed into IBM's arms. Dell, on the other hand, is going to work with a variety of other OSs that can be much easier on the budget.

IBM Power System S924 is perfect for running manufacturing or distribution centers. It's extremely reliable and has great durability. It requires little to no support from your IT staff. The supported operating systems (especially IBM i OS) are really stable and don't require a lot of maintenance. The hardware has a lot of built-in error checking, and it will contact IBM before you even know there is a problem. We haven't had a single instance where it had to be completely shut down in the six years I have worked at this company. It is great for back-end processing and is a great platform that is very scalable.

IBM Power Reliability

This system can work in a small factory with a few users and easily scale out to thousands of users. It is truly amazing on how much you can throw at this box and it will just keep humming. It is great for use across multiple departments and even across multiple corporations. I worked at one company where we were hosting multiple corporations on just one large Power System and had ZERO problems.
In all of the years I have used various Power System, I have never had any problems at all. Even when hackers were attacking our email servers and many users PCs, the IBM Power System came out completely unscathed. I haven't even had any application errors that were able to take the system down. Nor have I ever experienced an unplanned outage.
The IBM Power System is built for integration. It supports multiple operating systems and you can run multiple OS's on the same box with no problems at all. It also supports a number of open source languages such as PHP, Java, Python, and Perl which helps you continue to grow and integrate with lots of other systems.
