Overall Satisfaction with IBM Storage FlashSystem

We originally started using IBM Storage FlashSystem for our VDIs. Our initial VDI storage we replaced with IBM Storage FlashSystem lacked the speed we needed to have the local computer feel applied to our VDIs. The IBM Storage FlashSystem keeps our storage latency extremely low making our users experience within their VDIs so much better. The difference was night and day. The IBM Storage FlashSystem was easy to manage and scale up all with great redundancy. We then made the decision to purchase additional IBM Storage FlashSystem for our production file storage and remote backup solution. The replication policies are very easy to setup and maintain. In order to save time and make the transition from our old file server storage to the new IBM units, we copied all the files locally and then moved the DR replication to our offsite and started the sync. All went as expected. As far as maintenance, firmware updates are easily applied and can be done without any downtime.

Pros

  • Extremely fast storage
  • Scales up as needed. Add flash core modules easily and increase volumes very quickly.
  • Applying firmware updates to IBM Storage FlashSystem is very easy to do and can be done without any downtime.
  • Replication policies are very versatile and also easy to setup.

Cons

  • While the GUI does a pretty good job at simplifying most things. Expanding storage in a volume, you have to remove a volume from a group before you can expand. There may be a reason for this, but would love the option for it to do that task for you.
  • The shear speed of our IBM Storage FlashSystem has taken our latency between storage and VDIs from milliseconds to microseconds. This has made our end user VDI experience considerably better. Less lag across the board and our users haven't been happier.
  • The cost of IBM Storage FlashSystem may be a bit higher than your typical storage systems, but the performance makes up for the cost, 100%.
  • Like most system admins, we justified the initial purchase of our IBM Storage FlashSystem by pushing our previous production storage to our backup solution. At this perspective, we're investing in our production storage as well as our backup solution.
I find the IBM Storage FlashSystems are compact which can cut down on rack space used, the redundancy that's built into the IBM Storage FlashSystems are very reassuring, the GUI is very user friendly, and while we haven't needed to utilize IBM Storage FlashSystem support much since we've had our systems in place, the few times we utilized their help they were VERY helpful and dug into the issue to help resolve it as quickly as possible. But the most impressive and what is our most valuable asset of IBM Storage FlashSystem is the speeds.
IBM Storage FlashSystem Grid is one of the items we've yet to implement but very excited about. This will give us greater scalability and is a key factor we look for as our company is growing at a high rate. While we were able to cluster our previous storage system, it was a very clunky process and we chose not to deal with it at the time.
IBM Storage FlashSystem is MUCH faster than the options listed above. We were able to remove 12U of Dell equipment and relaced it with a 2U IBM Storage FlashSystem that was faster and had more storage available. The setup was extremely easier than our initial deployment of our Dell systems. Previous to deploying IBM Storage FlashSystem in our environment, we had quite a bit of lag in our user's VDIs leading to a lot of negative feedback on our systems. Since implementing IBM Storage FlashSystem, we've had tons of positive remarks and the number of helpdesk tickets our internal team has received have dropped considerably. We're spending more time on other initiatives with all the extra time we're saving.

Do you think IBM Storage FlashSystem delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with IBM Storage FlashSystem's feature set?

Yes

Did IBM Storage FlashSystem live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of IBM Storage FlashSystem go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy IBM Storage FlashSystem again?

Yes

IBM Storage FlashSystems are well suited as VDI storage for Citrix XenServer environments. Our Xen VDIs are much more responsive with the fast IBM storage attached. With the low latency, the users are experiencing much less lag while working in their Windows VDIs hosted on the XenServers. There's also less graphic fragmentation that occurs since moving to the IBM Storage FlashSystem.
