Overall Satisfaction with LexisNexis PCLaw

PCLaw is a wide-ranging application for billing and accounting. It is nicely linked with practice management software, such as Lexis Nexis Time Matters. It is a very powerful application capable of managing accounts receivable as well as a time input system for users of a firm. The ability to link the software to practice management means all clients and even time entries synchronize.
  • Link to practice management software to synchronize clients.
  • Provide structured and organized system for accounting.
  • Excellent tool for capturing time entries and keeping employees accountable.
  • Linking system is prone to issues.
  • No significant investment in updated features or functionality in several years.
  • Could use a facelift, but function over fashion.
  • Great solution for accounting and billing of clients.
  • Investment of time from employees in time entries to ensure productivity stays high.
  • Forces organization of clients and matters that is universal to all employees.
All legal accounting and billing software applications have their own flaws. PCLaw, as has been stated, has not had significant investment in features and functionality in quite a few years. That being said, it still gets the job done. There may be issues with the link system to practice management systems but overall it works. It has the most integration points with practice management solutions.
LexisNexis support does a great job. At times, it may feel like fighting with them to prove that PCLaw is the software that is causing a link failure, but overall the issues get solved. Annual maintenance plans are required to keep support for the application, which is reasonable. LexisNexis is a very old player in the market, so they have their processes down.
The software may not be pretty, but it works. It could use a facelift but the functionality is still there. Personally, I would like to see an investment to make it prettier, but again, function over fashion. It is not a client-facing application, so internal use does not need to be razzle-dazzle.

Did PCLaw live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of PCLaw go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy PCLaw again?

Yes

Law firms are extremely well suited (as the software was designed primarily for them) for PCLaw. It pairs and links to their practice management solution (such as LexisNexis Time Matters) and is one of the few billing and accounting software for law firms that works well. There are only a handful of competitors, which might explain why the software has not had any significant investment of features or functionality in quite a few years.
