Overall Satisfaction with Linode
We use Linode for our SME IT consulting gigs, where we customize, deploy, and manage self-hosted solutions such as Ghost and Wordpress for our clients. These gigs usually have relatively small budgets and low infrastructure complexity but still, need a high level of support and relative performance — requirements which we found Linode to be satisfactory in.
Pros
- Linux VMs.
- Straightforwardness.
- Support
- Included DDoS protection.
- Predictable pricing.
Cons
- Data lag in VM analytics.
- Lack of memory utilization chart in VM analytics.
- VLAN still coming soon to East and Southeast Asia regions.
- More one-click deploy app images.
- Lower cost.
- Give us ability to undercut competitors.
- Low maintenance.
- Low setup time.
Compared to the big cloud players like Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, MS Azure, Oracle Cloud, and co., Linode's product is simpler and cheaper. For quick and straightforward client engagements, the power and flexibility afforded by the previously mentioned vendors are overkill. Compared specifically to some of its closest rivals: Versus DigitalOcean, Linode has better pricing for VMs; while compared to Vultr, while Vultr's backups are cheaper (20% of VM cost versus effective ~25% of VM cost), Vultr's DDoS protection is an add-on product, which made the overall cost of the deployment more expensive. The runner-up competitor for our use cases, Hetzner, offers superior pricing; However due to their flaky KYC and anti-fraud which was a pain to deal with, I lost faith in them. They also do not have a region in East Asia, which would impact performance.
Linode simply made projects possible. Without their platform's straightforwardness, the simplicity and competitiveness of the pricing, and the performance of the virtual machines, our firm would not be able to engage in some of the smaller but plentiful and still lucrative and high-value (relationship-wise) engagements we have recently started expanding into.
Most of our deployments on Linode are for customers who use it for public-facing websites. If Linode goes down, our customers' reputation will suffer, which subsequently could lead to our client relationship getting ruined. IT services are one of the foot-in-the-door types of services we provide, which means not being performant means not only losing out on future IT engagements but also more lucrative consulting and business development gigs. So far, our Linode machines have been running reliably, and support has been good, so I hope this continues into the future.
