Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Matillion is used as the preferred ETL / ELT tool in our organization and has everything that we need for managing and maintaining our data warehouse in Snowflake. The built in connectors and integration with DevOps git makes pipeline creation very easy resulting in high productivity of Data Engineers. There is very detailed documentation available and Matillion support is very responsive. We have moved from a traditional on premise data warehouse to a cloud data warehouse and Matillion has made this transformation easy and sustainable.

Cons

Major upgrades are frequent and require change freezes
Post upgrades, certain things require reconfiguration and fixing
Pay per hour is not the best billing mechanism as sometimes only a few minutes are needed to do some tasks

Data Productivity

Indeed, it has helped us become more proficient in delivering data for reporting and analytics as well as it has helped us achieve other objectives like building data solutions via Snowflake. The pipeline templates enable us to speed up the pipeline building as we do not have to start from scratch.

There is a huge impact. It is easy to learn with a lot of resources available and the visual interface makes things more clear and visible to users when developing data pipelines.

Reliable Data Delivery

Data accessibility has been easier than ever. Visual interface reduces complexity and the coding is separated by different components making it very easy to edit or modify pipelines. The onboarding process is relatively quick and straightforward hence employee turnover is a slightly lesser pain. As a company we are moving to cloud based solutions and Matillion fits well in our landscape.

Stakeholders are happy as they are getting what is needed and the delivery speed is faster as compared to the on premise solution we had.

Usability

The best thing in this regard is the ease of onboarding new data engineers. Even the people who do not have much data engineering experience or background have easily adopted to this solution and are getting well versed with data transformations and building pipelines. The variables are a great way to enhance productivity and reduce workloads.

Alternatives Considered

SQL Server Integration Services, Apache Airflow, Alteryx Platform and Looker Studio

Matillion has more security and better version control features. The support of amazing with new connectors introduced every day.

Likelihood to Recommend

Matillion is well suited to maintain and manage our layered architecture based on medallion architecture principles. It caters to most of the data sources we have in our organization and also it has version controlling and documentation capabilities built in. It also integrates nicely with cloud platforms, Azure in our case for secure connections with key vaults.
The only drawback it has is when we need real time data update as we cannot keep the VMs on all the time for cost control. But again it is not built for that purpose.
