Overall Satisfaction with Memsource

I am a lecturer at Universidad del Rosario's diploma in Specialized translation. Memsource is part of the CAT tools module. My students love the program. They find it very useful and user-friendly. We translate general texts at the beginning of the module and technical text in the second half. The Academic Edition gives us all the features of the program, plus the option of assigning the PM role to some students. Therefore they can use it to prepare to be translators and project managers.
  • Create users with priorities
  • Clear analysis
  • Segmenting documents
  • Showing matches from TM and TB
  • QA
  • More management features like translators' availability or invoicing
  • Link to company website for quotes
  • OCR for PDF files
  • Project manager role
  • MT
  • Splitting text
  • Analysis
  • When used with students, they know the license is not as expensive as in other products
  • When used in a company, savings for repetitions and 101-100% matches and the time saved from splitting a text and working with more translators

Well suited for technical texts, contracts, and general texts. Less appropriate as most cat tools for humanistic and artistic texts.

Using Memsource

15 - They are postgraduate students (Academic License) or a combination of in-house and freelance translators (10 users corporate license)
1 - Problem solving skills
Basic computer skills
Knowledge about translation, QA and post-editing
  • Technical texts
  • Legal texts with technical annexes
  • Any text with defined terminology
  • We did not work on post-editing until we saw how good the results can be
  • More post-editing
  • Localization
I use and manage an Academic edition (approx. 15 students) and the corporate license (10 users). In both cases, the features are easy to find, set and use. My students and my translators understand the dynamics of the platform easily and get used to them quickly.

Evaluating Memsource and Competitors

Yes - Wordfast Pro 5 and Wordfast Server. The Server became inconvenient during the pandemic as it depended on a fixed IP. Both programs lacked management features and, by the time, also a machine translation feature.
  • Product Features
  • Product Usability
  • Prior Experience with the Product
I used a trial version because a colleague recommended it, and I found the program very user-friendly. The first benefit was being online and also having a desktop version. Then, as I discovered the features, I realized it had the ones I needed the most and not too many as in other programs that become overwhelming.
I would need to consider the same features, plus the tool in relation to management features such as quoting, invoicing, and checking the translator's availability and current assignments.
