Microsoft Entra ID Review
Overall Satisfaction with Microsoft Entra ID
Our primary usage, we use it kind of as a replacement for an on-prem active directory server. It uses and maintains all of our user multifactor authentication, endpoint access, and it integrates with our email Microsoft Teams, so we use it for the full Microsoft 365 stack and the integrations that Entra ID gives us is super valuable. I mean, everybody uses it, loves it.
Pros
- It's a great replacement for an active directory server. That's been our primary use case and it's been perfect for that.
Cons
- My biggest gripe I have with it is definitely going to be the Entra ID portal, especially the latest update that done to it. The way that the categorizations work for user management with Entra ID has just been a nightmare to manage and definitely revert. That would be my biggest update.
- It's definitely been a net positive overall. Being able to incorporate the licensing within our Office 365 scope, it saved us a ton of money. When we were using Okta before was an additional expense on top of our existing Microsoft 365 expenses, so being able to eliminate that has been great.
We are 100% cloud-based with our deployment. As it stands right now, we use Entra ID as our primary means of authentication for our users to support across all of our users, both on premises at our dealerships remote, and then at our satellite locations as well. So our general use case is just for it as our general ad replacement.
Not really. The only non-Microsoft app that we use is mostly within our financial department, and that's tied into Route One, which we use Microsoft Authenticator for. And then Ford Motor Company uses Microsoft ID as their multifactor authentication. Technically, I guess it would be considered theirs, not ours. So I guess in that case that'd be it there.
During the original deployment, there was definitely a little bit of rockiness just because of that multifactor authentication deployment and automotive industry being notoriously behind on update trends, especially in the securities sector. So training users on how to use Entra ID MFA was a little bit of a speed bump, but once we got past that it's been fine.
Previously we had worked with Okta, which was kind of using our replacement for active directory server, and I know that has integrations, but we ended up just going with Entra ID just for the ease of access and without having to stack on an additional third party application on top of our existing Microsoft infrastructure.
