Overall Satisfaction with MS SharePoint / SQL

Microsoft SharePoint is being used across our organization on a per project basis to manage and share documents. We also share information with our clients using Microsoft SharePoint. The controls within SharePoint make it easy to control who has access to certain documents so only those who need access to a certain project have access.
  • Microsoft SharePoint provides controlled access to information.
  • Microsoft SharePoint allows users to access information remotely.
  • Microsoft SharePoint allows collaborative work.
  • The user interface for SharePoint is not exactly intuitive.
  • To get the software set up correctly and to your liking, you have to have a lot of knowledge and time to customize the software.
  • Basic functions and navigation seem difficult.
I have used both Google Drive and Zoho Docs which seem similar to MS SharePoint. The main differences I noticed as a user is that the user interfaces in both Google Drive and Zoho Docs were much more intuitive and they were much easier to navigate than MS SharePoint. There are a lot more things that you can do with MS SharePoint, but for a smaller company, it may not be worth the investment.
I have not had any problems adding or merging data from disparate sources, although mostly our company uses this for uploading documents to share so that they are in a central location.
The sharing and collaboration capabilities of MS SharePoint are good. It is easy to add documents to share both internally and with clients. We don't use the software for some of the capabilities like checking and signing off on documents and collaboration is usually not happening since we have such a small company with one person from each discipline.
I think MS SharePoint is well suited for larger organizations, but not as much so for smaller organizations. The amount of customization and setup time may be a time suck for smaller organizations. I suggest that any companies that consider using SharePoint have a robust IT department to set up and administer the software.
