Overall Satisfaction with PitchBook

As a VC firm in a sector-specific industry, PitchBook is essential to our deal flow and investment decision-making process. We use it daily to screen potential investments, conducting deep dives into company fundamentals including financing history, post-money valuations, cap tables, and investor syndicate composition etc. We also leverage the platform for portfolio monitoring and tracking relevant M&A activity in our focus sectors. e also routinely use the data for for ad-hoc analysis. Finally, we use the excel-plugin to import price into our internal models

Pros

  • Comprehensive private market data
  • Sector specific coverage
  • Ability to generate detailed screeners

Cons

  • Cluttered UI - too much on the landing page
  • Natural language chatting
  • Analyst coverage into the company specific section
  • In terms of time saving, its certainly in the range of few hours of manual research that could be done in a few mins of Pitchbook session
  • More than ROI, it gives confidence in our analysis
Most of the time, if I have a question, I can get it resolved either in the chat section of the website or by reaching out to our AE for complicated tasks. I don't think I had to wait for answers for more than a day or a couple of days.
Refer to the first question for how we use Pitchbook data.

Generally, we work with the assumption that the quality is good. In most cases, we haven't come across any major significant issues in data quality but we also dont have comparable data sources to cross check. As a method of spot check, the deals that our firm has done is well documented on PitchBook, so we have additional confidence there
I think its a great platform as is. Its usable and we get most of the information as and when we need.

I don't like the landing page after login, so I don't like to go to PitchBook every day to review daily updates on the industry. It's way too cluttered and requires MFA every time
Pitchbook has the most exhaustive coverage of private market data, and that makes it uniquely differentiated against any other data sources mentioned above. As for public data, I dont think it is any unique compared to AlphaSense or CapIQ

AlphaSense, PatSnap, S&P Global Market Intelligence API Solutions
Appropriate:

We will use Pitchbook, for example, when we need to screen for companies in a certain sector or when a keyword gets a priced funding round (Seed, Series A, B, C).
Screening of deal as a way to benchmark prices of potential investments
Screening of potential LPs based on past investments

Challenging:
Quickly pull analyst commentary on certian companies/events. consensus sales or prices
Analyse non venture deals. for example in biotech, licensing deals are key ways to create value and always analysed in detailed. We will probabaly use dealbook or Cortellis for this
