Overall Satisfaction with Read&Write
We use the Read&Write extension to provide IEP accommodations to students who require text-to-speech, speech-to-text, word prediction, etc. We have purchased licenses for ALL students and staff in the district for the 2025-2026 school year. Each student receives a 1:1 Chromebook, and the extension will be added for them.
Pros
- Provides high quality voices for text-to-speech
- Modifies webpages to meet students' visual needs and preferences
- Use of speech-to-text across websites
Cons
- The translation tools has been challenging to use. I have trouble finding options for translation languages.
- I wish that users didn't have to download 3 separate extensions to use all the tools (R&W, Screenshot Reader, and Orbitnote)
- The cost of the tools high exceeds what we were previously paying for Snap&Read and Co:Writer.
- Increased access to grade level reading curriculum
- Improved learning experiences for students who struggle to read and write
- Meets needs of all students. Allows district to implement universal design for learning.
Students are able to easily access the Read&Write extension from their Chromebooks. We have not tried to use the iOS applications (I'm unaware if they are available). Students are able to sign in with their Google account and access the tool in the home setting on personal computers using the Google browser.
The text-to-speech feature in Read&Write is a favorite for students who struggle to read at the high school grade level. It allows them to access digital print materials independently without having to rely on an adult to read aloud to them. It has improved their independence and confidence.
