Overall Satisfaction with Read&Write

We use it mainly to provide screen reading services to students with (and without) disabilities and IEP accommodations.

Pros

  • Integrates well with Google and Chromebooks
  • Good and highlighting and reading on-screen text
  • Works well with other web-based platforms in the browser

Cons

  • We're ambivalent about the move to integrate AI, would like to see an option to disable AI integration
  • Not needing/tying up extra staff reading on-screen materials to students
  • Allows for better universal design
It has made providing read-aloud accommodations for students more efficient and less resource-intensive.
It has freed up SPED teachers and assistants a lot more, allowing them to better assist students.
Read&Write is the only app we have used so far.

Using Read&Write

150 - Screen reader for SPED and EL student accommodations.
6 - Instructional Technology Supervisor and Resource Teachers. Minimal skills are typically required to provide support.
  • SPED Read-Aloud Accommodations
  • EL Student Reading Accessibility
  • Universal Design for All Students
  • Universal Design - Some students who do not have IEPs or EL accommodations find its tools useful when working with on-screen text.
  • Provide additional training to teachers to help them show their students its uses. Create training videos on its use to share with students.
We love the ability of Read&Write to do what we intend - read on-screen text to the user. There are other functions that we generally do not see much use with, nor do we see the need for them, but the screen reader function is invaluable.

Evaluating Read&Write and Competitors

  • Integration with Other Systems
  • Ease of Use
Integration with Google, especially Chromebooks, was the #1 factor.
We're happy with our process.

Read&Write Implementation

We largely implemented on our own, with minimal assistance, and the process worked well.
Change management was minimal - Very little - our implementation went smoothly.
  • Mostly getting the Google integration set up, but the issues were resolved quickly.

Read&Write Training

It was very easy to learn and teach others. I'd recommend having those who can learn it easily train others in a train-the-trainer-esque style.

Configuring Read&Write

It is too limited - we would prefer to be able to disable features that we do not want to use in our district. (Especially AI-related features, it's still too new a technology to put too much trust in. Far too many companies have rushed to add AI, often using third-party AI platforms, which also mine their data and usage, and then make those products redundant by adding the features into the larger AI product - such as with ChatGPT.)
Google integration works well.
No - there is no facility to customize the interface
No - the product does not support adding custom code

Read&Write Support

ProsCons
Quick Resolution
Good followup
Knowledgeable team
Problems get solved
Kept well informed
No escalation required
Immediate help available
Support understands my problem
Support cares about my success
Quick Initial Response
None
Since we do not use all of the functionality of Read&Write, we did not see the need to pay extra for premium support.
They have provided very helpful support when we needed help with rostering setup.

Using Read&Write

It's very easy to use, although some students might get bogged down in the weeds of all of its features. It would be best if we could turn some features on or off on the admin side as needed.
ProsCons
Like to use
Relatively simple
Easy to use
Technical support not required
Well integrated
Consistent
Quick to learn
Convenient
Feel confident using
Familiar
None
  • Screen Reader
  • Google Chromebook Integration
  • All of the extra features that we would prefer to turn off on the admin side.

Read&Write Reliability

It was easily deployed districtwide to anyone who needed it, students, teachers, and staff alike.
No outages that we have observed.
The product typically loads quickly, with the main limitation being the machine that it runs within.

Integrating Read&Write

Google Integration went well.
  • Google for Education
We just use it for allocating licenses by adding individuals who need the licenses to a group within Google Admin. Quite easy.
  • None
We're not sure - we have not looked into this.
Start slow, one integration at a time to make sure it works well.

Relationship with Everway (formerly Texthelp and n2y)

They were easy to work with.
They have still been easy to work with since the sale and implementation.
The pricing is reasonable. A lower tier with just screen reading and basic functions would be nice, but not a deal-breaker.
