Overall Satisfaction with Red Hat OpenShift

We use RedHat OpenShift to manage our clusters, AWS resources, and containers.

Pros

  • Easy deployment of operators.
  • Cluster updates.
  • Dashboard/GUI.

Cons

  • No built-in scheduler for hibernating clusters.
  • Learning resources are hard to access.
  • Allowed our team to rapidly adopt kubernetes.
  • Expensive and draining on the budget.
  • Increased difficulty onboarding new users, because of unfamiliarity with OpenShift.
OpenShift has increased our organization's ability to develop, deliver, and maintain applications for the most part. However, there are some areas in which we feel limited because of the severely increased difficulty of having all of our resources and applications on OpenShift. Solutions that would have been obvious to us with another implementation are now significantly more complex.
Applications have been pretty performant. We sometimes do notice high latency or pages being less responsive than they should be.
From what I remember of Pivotal Cloud Foundry/Tanzu, OpenShift has a lot more features. Ultimately, our team went with OpenShift. After trialing multiple providers, we decided OpenShift was the best experience. We also had more confidence in Red Hat.

Do you think Red Hat OpenShift delivers good value for the price?

Not sure

Are you happy with Red Hat OpenShift's feature set?

Yes

Did Red Hat OpenShift live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Red Hat OpenShift go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Red Hat OpenShift again?

Yes

OpenShift is excellent for teams looking to utilize Kubernetes but lacks enough experienced personnel to fully self-maintain and self-manage it. OpenShift manages and abstracts away a lot of the difficulties. But it can be challenging to accomplish something that isn't inherently supported by the platform. Some prominent features that should be inherently supported are not.
