Overall Satisfaction with SAP Business Technology Platform

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Platform for organizing and managing the SAP S/4, Datasphere, Analytics Cloud and CPI solutions. Main focus for this review is the use towards Datasphere and SAC as the other offerings are beyond my daily work. For us the BTP platform offered a comprehensive platform for activating and administrating multiple SAP cloud offerings in a single place with common authentication and landscape setup (transports, roles) to enable efficient use of the limited SAP Basis personel.

Pros and Cons

Pros

One entry place for diverse and deep SAP offerings
Scalability both in terms of infrastructure and administration
Originally a very well thought out license model for customers to purchase credit to be used where needed. But this has transformed into a liability with the introduction of a new license model for BDC

Cons

Streamlined license where customers are not stuck with BTP credits that cannot be converted to BDC functionality despite SAP salespeople argued that it could be used for future offerings.
Poor segmentation of responsibilities when reusing BTP for transport management for multiple teams (e.g. S4. Datasphere, CPI)

Return on Investment

Huge contract in relation with S/4 purchase that left us with a large quantity of BTP credits that are now being undermined by new BDC credits that cannot be converted.
Some offerings seem left behind in unfinished state.

Usability

Good overall interoperability and powerful offering with regards to both monitoring, scalability and capabilities within the different services. Well thought out integration specifically between open connectors and datasphere which provides a much needed (though not complete when it comes to REST/Odata APIs) additions to the built in HANA SDI supported integrations.

SAP Analytics Cloud, Azure Data Factory, KNIME Analytics Platform, Microsoft Power BI, SAP Datasphere and SAP Business Warehouse

Core cloud offering when enterprise is already heavily invested in SAP. Essentially a must have component for the landscape and important element to enable support of the various SAP cloud offerings.

Likelihood to Recommend

Really strong offering for overview and control when migrating SAP tools to the cloud based deployment. Mature and user friendly UI that still has sufficient depth of customization in most areas. Good promise for unified license model, but time will tell if SAP will break that promise as we see it for the initial concept for BDC.
