Overall Satisfaction with SAP Business Technology Platform

We were building a SaaS product as an add-on for SAP and non-SAP ERP systems, within the tax compliance domain. The product targets a specific German tax law. We want to offer the solution with minimal implementation costs, in order to reach medium and smaller companies.

Pros

  • It allows building a SaaS platform, within the ABAP stack.
  • It offers integration with on premise systems.
  • It has a number of admin apps, ready to use.
  • It has built-in user and role management.
  • It offers patched and updated ABAP environmnts.

Cons

  • In the ABAP environment, I cannot add a git repository to a software component after creating the software component. And there is no way to transfer the development artefacts to a new software repository.
  • Positive: Delivery of software to customers is done fast.
  • Negative: initial learning curve, especially for technical cloud architects
We are currently developing a SaaS solution, and we are at the beginning of this process.

Definitely suited for building Cloud applications which integrate easily with SAP ERP systems, either on Cloud or on premise. Great at building metadata driven apps, which are well suited for corporate use.
Probably less appropriate to build a native node.js service, I imagine there are better Cloud options for that.

BTP is crucial for the the development and deployment of new add-ons for S/4 ERP systems, be it in the cloud or on premise, through wide adoption of the clean core concept proposed by SAP.

Evaluating SAP Business Technology Platform and Competitors

Yes - SAP BTP replaces the SAP ECC system when it comes to developing extensions for the core ERP modules.
There is no alternative to SAP BTP for building ABAP based add-ons for S/4HANA.
