Overall Satisfaction with SAP HANA
We use SAP HANA as the backend database for S4/HANA and BW systems. Also, we have an enterprise SAP HANA system used for reporting. All analytics solutions are built on this system.
Pros
- Faster query processing.
- Efficient storage of data - Well compressed.
- Graphical modeling tools for analytic applications that are not available in other databases.
Cons
- Better workload management - de-prioritize long running queries.
- Better scheduling and monitoring platform for XSA jobs. Built-in scheduler.
- Dependency analyzer like the one for CDS views for Calculation views.
- UI development options like ASAP selection screen for simple use cases.
- Built-in table editor.
- Provided the ability to run advanced analytic solutions with real-time data that could not be built in earlier tools.
- Provides better data insights in turn providing visibility to business processes.
We have not used real-time analytics at the scale that we would like to due to performance concerns. Also, real-time analytics require narrow data selections, whereas we prefer analytics to show long-term trends.
Our current use is limited to structured data. Planning to use document store in future. Other data types are not widely used.
All our analytics are written based on real-time data replicated from S4 systems. We do not have application servers and all the processing business logic is written in calculation views/procedures that run inside the database. This provides the best performance.
Currently, do not have any tools to show data lineage for calculation views which could be possible in other applications. This is a severe drawback if all the business logic is written inside the database.
