Overall Satisfaction with SAP HANA Cloud
As an SAP native HANA developer, I'm using SAP HANA Cloud to develop, run and maintain our team's solutions for the Supply chain stakeholders. Our main focus lies in creating business value through insights gained by means of developing advanced Analytic Apps.
Pros
- Fast reliable query engine for big data
- BAS: advanced development environment based on MS visual studio
- BAS extension graphical modeler
- Open source based development tools (VS code / Node.js / Python / extensions)
- Support CLI with direct Kernel access to the cloud workspace
- GIT engine integrated for advanced code management
Cons
- BAS graphical modeler, more options like the predecessor in Eclipse
- Option to use the BAS editor offline
- More options for monitoring system resources: CPU, Memory and connection pool
- Better cockpit interface to accommodate job scheduling/monitoring
- Simplified landscape architecture
- Less support needed (FTE) compared to on-premise
- Increased ROI by build-in easy-of-use integration capabilities
The in-memory database of SAP HANA Cloud enables us to query huge amounts at a lightning fast rate. This enables our end-users to gain real-time insights in order to make better business decisions. Also, the total cost of ownership is less compared to the traditional landscape, since less maintenance and support is needed.
Currently, we have no real requirements for these advanced data types. At the moment, the business cases we work on, primarily involve the more traditional data types. However, we developed several Proof of Concept pilot projects, to investigate these advanced data types; we're especially keen on the spatial and graph data types, they show some real promise and probably shall be used in the near future.
This capability is an excellent option in any hybrid scenario, especially through the use of SDA (Smart Data Access). The data adapter connects to the source system, where the data resides through a virtual table on a remote source. When a query is executed on such a remote data set, with SDA an attempt is made to push down any filters directly to the source system, instead of transferring the full data set and filtering after the data transfer has taken place.
SAP HANA Cloud allows for more advanced custom developments compared to comparable solutions build in the Business Warehouse. SAP BW, on the other hand, still has far more build in tools, like system monitoring, delta loading, advanced scheduling, and other data loading techniques.
