Overall Satisfaction with SingleStore
We use SingleStore for our various web apps. We were previously using AWS RDS which was slowing things down as we added more data and added more analytics, queries, and data enrichment tasks. Moving to SingleStore removed all of those bottlenecks.
Pros
- Performance - from 60 to 1,000 requests/min
- Scalability - grows as we grow
- Processing - predictive algorithms went from taking 48 hrs down to 15 min
- Customer Service - monthly touchpoints
Cons
- SSO integration was initially challenging - they are already improving this
- Cost - each tier literally doubles in price. It would be nice if there was some discounting as you go up.
- 16x faster on requests
- 200x faster on our heavy algos
- Cost of SingleStore is slightly less for incredible performance gains over RDS
- Stellar customer service
- Significantly lower operational complexity and management
SingleStore has allowed us to have a single platform for all our db needs both big and small. Previously we had a few "side" databases for little things that we didn't want to have bog things down. We also had a side db for some very complex queries and analytics that would always starve out the resources from the web apps. Now all of that is in one centrally managed place.
We were initially using AWS Aurora which worked well at the time but as we grew it just felt like a lumbering beast - even with tier upgrades. We started looking at caching & search options to help make searches faster - we were already using redis. We looked at and even implemented Elasticsearch and then ended up ditching that after about six months. For our usage, it caused more problems than it helped and had a lot of overhead and cost. We then looked at Algolia which seemed rather expensive to add on top of our current db expenses but then found the opensource meilisearch. We actually liked that quite a bit but weren't sure if we wanted to have to implement, host and maintain it. It also wasn't scalable (at that time) the way we wanted for future growth. It solved some problems but not all. SingleStore solved all these problems while essentially trading the cost almost straight across from Aurora and removed all the operating overhead in terms of maintenance. It was a no brainer.
