Overall Satisfaction with Sitecore Digital Experience Platform

Sitecore DXP has been used within our client organizations to manage content in a centralized location and also provide opportunities for delivering meaningful content to end-users. The platform offers a wide range of tools to make this happen which can either be deployed all at once, or as needed when business requirements call for it. Even if some of add-ons are not initially in-scope, it's good to know that there is a seamless integration available to make expansion and refinement possible.

Pros

  • The platform can be customized to fit specific business requirements
  • There are numerous integrations available
  • The platform handles any scale content needs with ease

Cons

  • The learning curve is very steep
  • Most platforms require a specific skillset
  • Although the interface can be customized, it is often not intuitive to build out a template or page. Drag and drop doesn't work as well as it could.
  • Authoring Efficiencies
  • Centralized Content Management
  • Excellent asset tracking capabilities
  • Ability to version and archive content
Initially it's a little tricky to set up the content components, but once they are in place, the system does a very good job at providing an intuitive authoring experience. The ability to customize the platform is both a blessing and a curse because the possibilities for content entry are limitless, but it does sometimes not lay the boundaries that it could to keep content management in-line and consistent. I don't think this is as much of an issue with the platform as it is with having the right strategies and governance in place to manage how the platform is configured and administered.
Manging multiple websites is a breeze, again, if properly strategized and governed. There are efficient ways to manage multiple sites when it comes to settings definitions, global content (for content re-use purposes), but I have also seen some projects go off the rails with multi-site management. Unfortunately, this is not usually a fault of the platform, but ultimately the platform gets blamed for not working properly.
Once you learn how to use the platform and can put a solid strategy in place to manage it long-term, it becomes a lot easier to use. The tricky part is working with resources who are familiar with the platform to navigate some of the common implementation and configuration pitfalls. Although Sitecore has worked very hard to overcome some of these from their earlier product versions by creating wizards and improving their support documentation, at the end of the day it is still a very complex and powerful system that needs to be implemented carefully in order to foster the best possible user experience for authors. So it could be rated very usable or not usable at all based on how much planning took place and the quality of the implementation.
Really the only comparable product to Sitecore DXP is Adobe Experience Manager. Both are very well established and robust content management platforms. Products like Contentful and Contentstack are very lightweight and do not have as many built-in features like DXP, so it is not a fair comparison. For highly complex enterprise type engagements, Sitecore DXP and AEM are always brought to the table together for consideration.

Sitecore DXP would be very useful in situations where the business needs:
- Personalization journeys
- Large-scale content management (i.e. high traffic websites, 100K+ digital assets, AI-enabled support)
- Complex content management (components, taxonomy, workflows, roles)
- Customized authoring experiences

It would not be as practical for:
- Small scale websites (not cost effective)
- Simple, out of the box functionality
- Specific tech stack resources
