Overall Satisfaction with SketchUp

We use SketchUp in all phases of design and construction documents for both residential and commercial projects.
  • 3D visualization.
  • Clear communication of design and detailing.
  • Over reliance on plugins vs. real product development.
  • The inability to group and collapse scenes make navigation and organization somewhat complicated.
  • It allows for easy design development and clear communication with clients, especially those who have difficulty translating 2D images/drawings.
  • Workflow allows for efficient movement thru project phases, adding detail when appropriate.
SketchUp has a low software cost and an easier learning curve.
Product updates are released fairly regularly but focus more on minor details than major function upgrades. Third-party training sources are as good as, and in some cases better than direct support.

SketchUp is a lightweight BIM alternative that allows for efficient workflow from the early phase of design through construction documentation. It's most suitable for smaller projects, as models are only able to be accessed by one user at a time.
