Overall Satisfaction with SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor
SolarWinds NPM is the eyes and ears of our network. It gives us global visibility in to everything on our network and it's status. Without it, we would be blind to issues and be reactive instead of proactive when things happen.
- SNMP polling. It has a tremendous database of almost any device you can think of available.
- Wireless monitoring. It can pull all our meraki and Aruba info in to the same panel as all our other switch gear.
- Space Monitoring. It keeps tabs on all the space available across all our devices.
- Speed. It can be slow when there are lots of devices monitored.
- Cloud aware. It does have ties to the cloud, but lacks a lot in this space.
- Database. It would be nice if it ran on something other then SQL server. It can get costly given the SQL requirement.
- It's hard to put a real number on it, but the ROI for it is there. The ability to see everything and know that it's working is essential to success running any IT organization.
I've used cloud based things like New Relic and app logic, but nothing compares to SolarWinds in the simplicity and ease of rollout. Nagios is probably the closest, but I find it to require much more time to setup/configure given it's open source nature. SolarWinds is plug and play. I can deploy in less than an hour across an org and have real monitoring within two hours.
