Overall Satisfaction with SolarWinds Virtualization Manager

Everyone in the department has access to SolarWinds Virtualization Manager (VMAN) but I am the primary stakeholder and use it to get info from my vCenter environment. It slightly assists in placing VMs on the various hosts and attempts to show where resources can be reclaimed.
  • I like that I can delete snapshots from the Orion console
  • I like that I can get info/alerts on virtual guests that are not even added to Orion yet as long as the host is part of the vCenter I am monitoring
  • Like a single pain of glass where I can see all my metrics
  • The reporting needs a ton of work!!! RVTOOLS does and reports on everything in vCenter. I want all the info from the vCenter to be able to report on....like annotations.
  • I need cost analysis for moving my workload into AWS and Azure, ASAP!!!
  • It has not saved us any money but is useful to quickly check the overall health of the environment.

Not rally apples to apples here since I use OpenManager to update my firmware.

VMAN is a decent product but needs some work. I guess if you have nothing else, VMAN would work in a pinch.

Using SolarWinds Virtualization Manager

It just not mature enough for me to have it replace more robust tools. Look at RVTOOLS, it is free and can report on everything in vcenter.
Like to use
Relatively simple
Easy to use
Technical support not required
Well integrated
Quick to learn
Feel confident using
  • Setting it up was easy
  • I don't like that you can't pick and choose the hosts you want to license
  • There is not enough reporting
  • I wish it brought in all my vcenter information including annotations
