Overall Satisfaction with Veritas NetBackup
Netbackup (NBU) was used to backup all systems at one point, but cost drove us to use another solution. NBU currently is being used to backup SQL application level data. At the time of the switch, NBU wasn't able to backup Hyper-V, which also influenced our decision to switch.
Pros
- It is a major player in the backup space, and has an answer for most every data protection problem.
- Support is pretty good by IT standards. They were always able to quickly isolate a problem and offer a solution.
- They have appliance-based solutions which help with building out a topology.
Cons
- They should be on top of developments so that they can release compatible updates. They lost our business in part because they were slow to react to Hyper-V 2012 R2.
- Cost is prohibitive for many IT shops, large or small.
- The cost is substantial no matter how it is licensed. They switched from a host based model to a storage based scenario, and the cost was lower at first, but quickly spiraled out of control. Our renewal and trueup was just too much.
