Overall Satisfaction with Tableau Desktop

We have a new implementation of a data warehouse and Tableau will be the reporting mechanism.
  • The graphs are very easy to create!
  • Easy to design workbooks and graphs.
  • You can quickly see trends and anomalies in your data!
  • Add functionality to put a dashboard in a dashboard. Currently not available.
  • Add settings to help in the joining of tables. (IDs only, etc).
  • More work on extracts! They can still be slow and cumbersome.
I have used several reporting tools and Tableau is the best by far.
If you have a large database or subject area it is best to pare it down. Large volumes of data do not lend to fast performance in Tableau.

Evaluating Tableau Desktop and Competitors

Yes - We have Microsoft SSRS in house and write a lot of ad hoc reports. Tableau will reduce the number of reports needed and the interface is so much nicer!
  • Product Features
  • Product Usability
  • Prior Experience with the Product
  • Vendor Reputation
Tableau's product features made the decision an easy one. We wanted more visualizations and no one does it as well. The users are very happy with the tool. I was amazed that there were 10000 users at the conference and all were talking about how wonderful the tool was.
We wouldn't change it - we are very happy with Tableau.

Using Tableau Desktop

Besides my team we have several users developing reports and it has been a great experience.

Lots to learn
  • Graphing is easy to do. It gets harder when you have a particular graph capability that you must mimic.
  • Dashboards are super easy. Dashboard actions make the workbooks come alive.
  • Filtering and parameters are a great tool in the workbooks to limit your data down to a subset that you can analyze fully.
  • The calculations are a bit tricky.
  • Graphs that don't follow the popular path can be hard to create. It is not intuitive what to do "next".
Yes - I have not done this yet.
