It is a software, amongst others, offered by some departments for data sharing, visualization and promoting collaborations.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Data visualization: a wide range of them available and pretty plots.
Drag and drop: no need for complex coding.
Real-time interaction with the data.

Cons

Pretty expensive
Inability for scripting could sometimes be a handicap

Spotfire can do similar things, but Tableau's plots are prettier in my opinion. However, if one needs to perform complex calculations on the data first, Spotfire can do it better than Tableau. So, it depends on the task at hand.

Likelihood to Recommend

It is great for visualizing standalone data and quickly generating and sharing very impressive plots, but other software would be better if some complex calculations are needed. Its high cost is also a drawback.
