Overall Satisfaction with The Okta Identity Cloud
It is used by our entire organization to authenticate and authorize users to various applications. It serves as a single source of identity for our applications regardless of which cloud they are in, allowing us to be multi cloud. It offers many integrations with other SaaS applications, so that users can just click a tile on their home screen and get signed into that SaaS provider.
Pros
- Good documentation
- Widely used and trusted in the industry
- Very little downtime or outages
Cons
- Needs better self service APIs for developers
- Needs more supported client libraries for developers
- Needs to support common developmemt frameworks sooner after they release
- Speed and ability to deploy apps to cloud that require user identity
- Speed to integrate with SaaS providers
- Improved security such as 2FA and cloud AuthN and AuthZ
Definitely! This was one of the main reasons we chose Okta over something like Azure AD. The fact that they only do identity and don't try to sell other cloud services gives them an incentive to not lock us into a certain cloud, or prioritize their own platforms. We can write our apps once and run anywhere!
Overall we have been mostly happy with genealogy questions and consulting advice. Specific issues we had with the development libraries, however, was not as good. We had to wait 8 months before they supported Spring Boot 2 after its release. And we had issues with their vue libraries that is still not resolved after months. We abandoned this library and switched to Google's.
It has been very reliable with only 1-2 outages I can remember, and some of those were only in development. So it has made our business function great and instilled trust in the service and vendor as a whole.
Do you think Okta delivers good value for the price?
Yes
Are you happy with Okta's feature set?
Yes
Did Okta live up to sales and marketing promises?
Yes
Did implementation of Okta go as expected?
Yes
Would you buy Okta again?
Yes
Azure AD had better developer library support and documentation, but we weren't with Okta because it had more flexibility in how user tokens for OIDC could be generated. At the time, a few years ago (2017), Azure only allowed so many AD groups into the token but Okta didn't have that limitation.
