Overall Satisfaction with Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

We use the system to back up our physical servers and send the backups off site.
  • Backups
  • Restores
  • Syncing offsite
  • Sales
  • Upgrades
  • ROI was not very good at all. I'm having to replace the solution after 3 years at a substantial cost.
  • No upgrade path. You have to throw more money at Unitrends for a whole new system every 3 years or so. Want to keep your existing solution for more than 3 years? Unitrends will charge you a 30% penalty on your new maintenance agreement for the right to do so.
  • I was told during the sales calls before I purchased that we would receive new boxes every three years. That was a lie.
The product stacks up very favorably in the industry as compared to other disk to disk backup appliances. There are many nice features. Ultimately, we feel like Veeam is a better backup solution for VMware and we will be looking for a comparable alternative to performing backups of our physical servers as soon as possible.
The appliances and the virtual appliances are expensive and the physical appliances have no upgrade path. When I purchased the physical appliances I was told there was a trade in policy and when the time came for me to upgrade using that policy I was told that no such thing existed. The physical appliances are standard supermicro or similar servers and can accept regular hard disks yet Unitrends wants to sell you a new box at a substantial capital outlay and just throw the other backup appliances away. Just recently, I received a quote for a one year maintenance agreement from Unitrends for my two backup appliances. The maintenance for one year was already expensive yet on top of that Unitrends also added a "30% Uplift fee" for "legacy and outdated Unitrends". My two Unitrends appliances are 3 years old. The grand total annual maintenance cost for the Unitrends solution? Almost $5,000! We have quit using the Unitrends solution for our virtual infrastructure and have implemented Veeam instead. When I can, we will purchase something else for our physical server backups as well.
