Overall Satisfaction with Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance
Unitrends is used to protect the data of our on premises servers, key workstations, and some mobile users with laptops. Servers include Microsoft Windows Server 2012 hardware, VMware virtual machines running Windows, Linux, and Cisco products. Data center backups run each evening while workstation and laptops run during the day. Our two Recovery-823 units replicate between campuses ensuring backups of our critical systems are available at both locations if needed. Each weekend both systems archive the latest backups to Google Cloud storage. Utilizing Unitrends has lowered our monthly backup costs and eliminated the need to store and manage physical tapes on or off site.
- Easily backup all disks and volumes of a system we wish to image or replace hardware. Instead of deploying Ghost we now just restore using Unitrends.
- Site to site replication of key systems to ensure data access in the event of a disaster.
- User interface and reporting system make Unitrends easy to use and does not take much time to manage weekly.
- Better ability to backup laptop users who only connect to the network periodically during the day. If Unitrends could "detect" a mobile client was online it could then backup opportunistly.
- Better "dashboard" so admins do not have to poke around the system menus for info and status.
- More flexible job control for scheduled jobs that are missed.
- Ability to protect users with easy. Simple client install.
- Has made hardware upgrades and system change outs easier by allowing us to backup in place user and restore to new system.
- Improvements could be made with Unitrends support and UI to Google Cloud for archives.
We were must interested in a turn-key system designed from the top down to be a backup solution. A similar system from Riverbed and Nimble Storage were more of the SAN / app acceleration type hardware where Unitrends met all our needs.
