Veeam: a great software solution backup to ease monitoring and labor
Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication
Veeam is utilized as one of the backup options for my clients. It is software-based (versus a BDR appliance) and is very efficient for backing up servers internally or offsite. The software is used for the entire organization's systems and data and solves the problem of backing up data and infrastructure.
Pros
- Create initial image level and agent based backups of servers.
- Efficiently and reliably manage backup jobs.
- Effortlessly synchronize data offsite with minimal labor and monitoring.
Cons
- It is only software based, one must supply their own BDR and/or storage location.
- While flexible, the software needs to run on a Windows-based appliance, bring your own appliance/OS license.
- Superb backup system and very reliable
- Minimal effort to setup and monitor.
- Easy to spec out licensing and purchase.
Yes, it is very flexible as far as destination goes. Veeam offers its own cloud but will also allow you to select your own destination that is onsite or offsite. This makes things very interesting to spec out and resellers can also easily setup offsite replication for clients they intend to sell product to.
Veeam does a great job of running with minimal involvement from a live person. It can do data verification both after the job completes and manually test a previous job. It carries with it the permissions and security for files and folders which ease client's minds. This software is great for heavy compliance clients because they can opt to replicate their data to a secure location vs. convince their vendors/partners that a third-party cloud is secure.
Veeam is the best of software-only solutions. Carbonite and Mozy may have more economical pricing but require constant monitoring and maintenance to work well. Veeam is extremely reliable and easy to use. Barracuda Backup and Unitrends are primarily BDR appliances, while Unitrends is not great at image backups, both solutions are an all-in-one solution whereas Veeam requires you bring your own host.
