Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication
We are worried about ransomware. While we do have a cloud backup, we knew that it would take over 3 days to restore the data via the internet and 1-3 days to get a physical drive from the cloud provider with the data on it. Veeam backup allows me to have a system not included in the domain that backs up the data locally. If we do get hit, I should be able to immediately have an onsite backup copy.
- Easy installation.
- Doesn't need to be part of the domain.
- Ability to restore partial backups.
- More intuitive backup and restore.
- Gives us the ability of a quick restore.
- Peace of mind.
As a small company, we only have one server and it's doing a great job protecting that. Because we have a small data set to protect (less than 2 TB) the community edition works great. With volume shadow copy and a cloud backup, this gives me three legs in my backup stool.
I really like the fact that Veeam has a community edition which lets me use the product without having to do a large cost/benefit analysis. It is adequate for our existing size (and we don't really anticipate data growing much.) However, even for the organizations that have larger data sets, starting with the community edition allows first-hand experience prior to getting full approval.
- Code42 (formerly CrashPlan)
The Code42 product is easier to set-up and doesn't require onsite hardware. Restoring files is a bit more intuitive. However, access to the data is limited by my internet connection so the first backup and a full restore would take a LONG time. Having the Veeam product in house allows me to have a full backup very quickly.
